Other than oft-mentioned Apocalypse Now, my favorite military movie is probably Black Hawk Down, which I feel is a very underrated flick.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned IN THE ARMY NOW? Who needs George C. Scott or Marlon Brandon when you have Pauly Shore and Andy Dick...

Agree completely with Blackhawk. It blew me away when I first saw it, and I also think it's vastly underappreciated.

A few haven't seen mentioned yet

              Dr. Strangelove
              Memphis Belle

And someone has to do it: TOP GUN.

I just saw The Hurt Locker today. And it fully deserves to be listed with the best of the best.

Doesn't it though? As of today, I'm picking it for Best Picture.

For once I agree with you. I was one of the few people who actually enjoyed the book and the film.

Yep...Black Hawk Down was one of the few films that made me feel panic, and dread and hopelessness. Terrific film, and one that I always second-guess myself on if I want to watch it again....

Totally agree about Black Hawk Down. Wonderfully shot. I really love the Ridley Scott movies with the epic set-pieces. Just caught Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut recently. Absolutely brilliant.
