Not exactly sure what you are meaning when you say "powerful" though. Do you mean powerful in how humans need them to help certain situations and/or emotional connections, like Wilson helps Tom Hanks character from losing his mind completely. Or powerful in the way the audience reacts to them? Please extrapolate the meaning behind what you are looking for.
-Chernabog, in Fantasia.
-the Tyrannosaurus Rex in Jurassic World (same one as in the original Jurassic Park, from what I understand)
-the Hebrews' tribal deity in The Ten Commandments, 1956 (the one who unleashes all the plagues and pillars of fire and such)
-Sauron, in Peter Jackson's Tolkien films
great stuff! and holy crap, HAL appeared in this thread.
as usual, i have no idea what i'm looking for. just throwing a line into the water. pretty good place to fish, this place.
i like wilson, because of how he became a real character, like a person. the drama of wilson floating away as hanks about drowns trying to save...a ball. that is movie magic at its best. the yellow brick road is like a character, but it is more like a means of transportation for the story to follow, etc. the briefcase in dumb and dumber was sort of like a character, labowski's rug, etc, but...none of them stack up
to wilson.
the house plant in THE PROFESSIONAL.
the river in A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT.
also shoes, in GLORY, seem like a powerful collective sort of character. not guns. shoes.
'guests' and employees (lloyd) of the overlook hotel in THE SHINING.
i guess a lot more characters in King's stories.
the house in THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. 'gET oUT. gET OUt!!!"
the cars in DRIVING MISS DAISY...over the years they sort of haul the story from the beginning when the old lady has an accident and needs a driver, until the end when her driver can no longer drive and is driven to visit her in a nursing home. in less than two hours of movie magic, he became her best friend. and he put up with a lot getting there where he is helping her to eat her dessert. magic.
King Kong. Godzilla. Mighty Joe Young. Drago in Dragonheart. Smaug. Gorgo & Mom. Gwangi in the Valley of Gwangi. The Id Monster in Forbidden Planet (although you could make the case that that was a human monster). Also, Robby the Robot.
The ants in Naked Jungle. The giant ants in Them. Colossus in Colossus the Forbin Project. Tobor the Great. Gort, Kronos, The monoliths in The Monolith monsters, the blob, Caltiki (another sort of blob). X the unknown (a radioactive blob), The Green Slime ( a green blob that turns into an army of tentacled one-eyed monsters). The flying saucers in Earth vs. The Flying Saucers. The Ymir in 20 million miles to Earth.
the dead father who shows up in the mowed cornfield to play catch with his estranged son at the ending of FIELD OF DREAMS.
the giant delicious chocolate pudding which tries to eat los angeles in THE PUDDING (is not out yet...in fact, not bought, not optioned, no interest in it whatsoever, but anyway i wrote and a cheap plug...sorry).
