Default Faxing Queries

Hey guys,

I'm a writer and director from Salt Lake City. I moved to L.A. just last week to advance my screenwriting career. I've been doing a lot of query e-mails, but many management and agency sites don't have direct e-mail listings. Understood and appreciated. Yet, there is a fax number on many of them.

How many of you send queries by fax? Is it at all effective? Is e-mailing THE way to get them out there, especially when couple with imdbPro?

Any advice for this, plus advice on networking in general out here is much appreciated.

Never say never...but odds are, no one is going to answer a query by fax. Also, almost all managers/agents have available e-mails...you just have to do some research.

Fax. What year is this? It's 2013. Email dude. It's not hard to figure out the domain names of management companies or agencies. You often can get an idea of the email structure pretty easy as well. google search is your friend.

Hey, if you don't have an email address, why not fax? I'm not saying a fax should be the first contact, but...what's the worst that could happen? They ignore it?

On the other hand, maybe it gets picked up by an ambitious assistant, and who knows?

The good thing about faxing is that the recipient is virtually guaranteed to at least glance at the physical paper, though they're likely to throw it out anyways.

I think I've used the Flat Rate Fax service when I couldn't find email/snail mail addresses for certain people. It's an online service like writing an email, so you don't have to go to Kinko's or wherever.

That being said, hardly anyone uses faxes these days, and most of the fax numbers you find will be disconnected.

I would figure the greater utility with use of an email is their ability to reply quickly -- and, even on the run. Like this...

Hey, since you're out there, why not hire a skywriter?
That way you can query all of Hollywood all at once.

Thanks for the answers. Much appreciated. That is the response I was thinking of; I know faxing is still "the thing" in Japan, but I knew it was sort of dead here. It would be interesting to find out when anyone was actually last picked up due to a fax.

Some companies have their faxes converted into emailed pdf's which end up in the receptionist's/assistant's email account.
Also, I did a test sampling of emailed queries, recently via www.activepitch.com.
You can tell if they've been viewed with this service.
No one even opened them, so I'm not sure how effective emailing is anymore either.
I think the best bet is to meet as many people as you can.
Sure, I've gotten some bites via email in the past, but seems like it's always been a small percentage.
Good Luck!
