  • Women soldiers in Iraq

    Are they:

    1. routinely assigned to patrols?

    2. and are they armed much the same as their male counterparts?

Can they engage in firefights, or must they stand back?

    1. routinely assigned to patrols?
No. Women are usually in support roles, medics, supply, transport, things like that.

    2. and are they armed much the same as their male counterparts?
No. From what I can remember from my three years in the Army, and this was over six years ago, and there was only one female medic I routinely came in contact with during field operations, they carried side arms. But I'm sure they give them a little more firepower during an actual war.

Can they engage in firefights, or must they stand back?
They won't engage in firefights in the sense of sweeping through houses looking for insurgents. But if they, or their base, is attacked they will defend themselves.

    Hope this helps.

And again, this is from my experience over six years ago, so things might have changed. If anybody has any updated info that is different, feel free to slap me down.

        Re: Women soldiers in Iraq

Jake, the documentary Operation Dreamland (I think that's the name) profiles a couple female soldiers stationed in Iraq. It's not a great doc overall, but the bit on the chicks might be helpful.

Thanks, Hairy (and to those who PM'd me). I've solved the (albeit minor) issue, though, and at least it doesn't break the bounds of credibility.

stretching credibility is a solution? There is enough disinformation from Hollywood as it is.

Female marines are being blown up on patrols in Iraq, if we are going to depict them in a script written from the comfort of an armchair, it's the least we can do to try our absolute damnedest to present an accurate and credible picture.

Female US Marines man checkpoints (a de facto front line) and I'm sure they are as heavily armed as their male colleagues when deployed in such a role (the rules concerning females on the front line have been stretched, so that Muslim women can be searched with cultural sensitivity...).

UK also deploys female soldiers in combat zones. On the very day Iran released their 'hostages', two young women on patrol in Basra were killed by an Iranian bomb (this was Iran's real "gift to the British people"):

              Re: Women soldiers in Iraq

A female Marine who died in Iraq’s Anbar province Feb. 7 was killed at a checkpoint while participating in the Corps’ Lioness program, according to a Feb. 23 Marine Corps news release.

Cpl. Jennifer M. Parcell, a landing support specialist with Okinawa, Japan-based Combat Logistics Regiment 3, assumed her billet with the Lioness program Feb. 1, according to a spokesman for III Marine Expeditionary Force on Okinawa. The program uses female Marines from different military occupational specialties to search Iraqi woman at checkpoints.

Parcell, who was a few weeks shy of returning to Okinawa, was killed when an Iraqi woman she was searching detonated an explosive vest, the release said.

Thanks, all. I've received the info I need (from someone who served in the Army for many years), and am all set. This thread may now be declared...officially defunct.
