  • Odd ball dialogue montage

I know montage are not suppose to have dialouge but I'm am stringing a single speech a character is delivering in different locations at different times by breaking it up and having him say lines in each location.

I want to have him in one part of the speech reference the location Des Moines, Norfolk, Jacksonville, Edgewood. At this point, the city location is all that is said in each scene. It's suppose to be rapid cut.

Do I have to create new scene headers for each line? Or can I try a hybrid montage format?

    MONTAGE:

Jack stands at a podium "Des Moines"
Jack on stage in a park talking to a small crowd "Norfolk"
Jack in a packed hall "Jacksonville"
Jack in a half full bar "Edgewood"

Maybe it's not a montage but intercut? Any advice is appreciated.

Not intercut, which means going back and forth between two scenes.

You need separate slugs but don't worry about this slowing it down. The pace will be determined by how much is said or how much occurs at each location.

You could try a "hybrid montage" but considering how little is said at each location the most efficient way might be to use mini-slugs, especially if these are just sets and the shot doesn't need to be filmed in the actual location.

This is how I would do it (if my character were a politician that panders to his audience)
      JACK
      I truly love coming here.
Des Moines is by far my
      favorite city--

      CUT TO - Norfolk stage
      JACK
      --Norfolk is by far my
      favorite city--

      CUT TO - Jacksonville stage
      JACK
      --Jacksonville is by far my
      favorite city--

      CUT TO - Edgewood stage
      JACK
      --Edgewood is by far my
      favorite city--

Another thought, perhaps more traditional, is to set up the montage in a slug and then in subslugs to play with context and reveal, in this example, character:
        Code:
        MONTAGE - JACK'S STUMP SPEECH:

-- SNOWY DES MOINES - DAY

                         JACK
                 I truly love coming here.
                 Picturesque Des Moines--

         -- RAINY NORFOLK - DAY

                        JACK
                 Lovely Norfolk--

         -- STEAMING JACKSONVILLE - DAY

                        JACK
                Beautiful Jacksonville--

         -- WINDY EDGEWOOD - DAY

                       JACK
Enchanting Edgewood, is by far my
                    favorite city--
...and so on. Not specifically tailored to your locations. Just an example. Good luck.

          Who says? Rules, rules, rules.

I've done montages with V.O. that provides narration to the sequence. Usually it's something that's not being seen (which would be redundant) or provides more information or subtext.

This is not a big difference from having actual dialogue going on among some of the characters depicted in the montage (or series of shots).

            Straight out of Fight Club:

            JACK (V.O.)
No. Wait. Back up. Let me start earlier.

            INT. JACK'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Jack lies in bed, staring at the ceiling. He hears VOICES from beyond
the wall. A FLY buzzes over his face. He swats at it, missing.

            JACK (V.O.)
For six months. I couldn't sleep.

            INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE - DAY

Jack, eyes puffy, face pale, sits before the Doctor, who studies him
            with bemusement.

            DOCTOR
No, you can't die of insomnia.

            JACK
Maybe I already died. Look at my face.

I'm coming in late to the party, but I think James B nailed it perfectly. I hope you were taking notes:-)
