  • TV Bidding War?

I have a handle on this term on the features side of the business and the types of things that go into the deals but wondered if any of you more erudite TV folk can shed some light on what this term tends to elude to in TV land? Yes, we've all read about the 'straight to series' orders that happen but that feels (broadly speaking) like a given in a competitive situation where you're in the fortunate position of a bidding war with multiple networks all wanting your show.

Just a tad curious as to what type of additional details tend to swing a deal in one network's favor over another?

It's no different. You want better terms/pay. Better terms if the show is ordered to series, better back-end, better title (some creators are only co-EP, while if you have a bidding war you could potentially ask for EP credit.)

So if (for example) you've already agreed an 'if/come' type deal with the prod co attached to the project, does this then become part of a new renegotiation if multiple buyers are interested in the show and it's heading towards a bidding war? As in, your reps then push for newer, stronger terms than was originally agreed? Or are these bidding wars more of an interaction between producers and buyers of the series?

I think it's case by case but if you're locked into an if/come deal with a prodco then they'll be the ones to handle negotiations and (not an expert here) but part of what will make THEIR negotiation leverage stronger is that your deal is pretty much static. They may get a better deal for themselves as producers, but you'd be beholden to the contract at hand.
