  • Manager has upfront fee???

    Hi all,

At first I thought this sounded sketchy. And I still think it sounds weird. But I'm not sure.

Basically a manager has offered to sign me, but there is an upfront fee that is reimbursable against future sales or options (e.g. Option=10,000 Mgr. Cut=1,000-Fee). He's active in producing some legitimate projects and has an eclectic clientele -- mostly mid or low level.

    Thoughts?

      Nope.

I wish you'd say who it is. People like this need to be outed.

I would. Can anyone speak to the rules about that type of thing? Can the name be PM'd?

There's no rules against naming him.

The guy made a business proposition. It's not illegal, but it isn't ethical and certainly not industry standard.

There's nothing wrong with calling him out and you certainly don't have to worry about any blowback from a legitimate Hollywood entity for having done it.

A scammer trying to make a buck on what he/she perceives as rabid, inexperienced writers desperate to have some form of representation. No.

There is no reason to protect this person.

And do not get into business with them.

Don't call them names or anything. Just politely tell them no.

Trust me, he's not actively doing anything but stealing money from writers as his business model. A real manager takes no money upfront, only % when they sell something of yours.
