  • Using Lyrics To A Song In Normal Dialogue...

More of a "legal" type question.

Will it cause trouble if a script uses lines (or similar wording) from songs, in normal dialogue, without referencing the song?

    For example...

    GREG:
I need think of a way to get there!

    FRED:
Your best bet is to just buy a stairway to heaven.

No reference at all to a song. He's not singing it. He doesn't "know the song exists" essentially.

    Issues with doing this?

My script has a bunch of these. "I've got some bad news for you, sunshine" being my favorite.

There are no legal issues with this.

my favorite joke on the Sopranos, maybe for the whole series:

Christopher Moltisanti: [Explaining to Tony and Silvio why he's late] The highway was jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive!

I believe that would be under common knowledge. The only way it is an issue if you have the song playing but you don't.
