Yeah, I didn't see it, too.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey
They tapped into the "curiosity" of audiences, whether the audience had read the book or not. Women wanted to see it and men likely wouldn't object to seeing it with their partners, I'm sure.
I'll never give it my time or money, but congrats to them for making a heap of cash off of smut.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey
I saw it. My curiosity was more about HOW do you adapt THAT and get an R rating?
The answer: you leave a lot out. There's still a shocking amount of scenes left in -- and oddly, a lot of female nudity, which seems strange since the film is directed at women (?) To get that rating, though, a lot of scenes were made less violent/ overbearing/manipulative.
Overall, I think the screenwriter did the best she could. I can't imagine anyone doing better with what they had to work with.
The actors had no chemistry to speak of, and I think Jamie Dornan was miscast. He didn't get any scenes to really reveal his personality or make him three-dimensional -- which may have helped the audience want them to be together. My reaction was -- wow, that guy really doesn't want to be here. Dakota Johnson was very good, fresh and pretty, and I root for her to succeed onward in her career, she deserves it. She held the entire film together by the force of her pure outlook and raw vulnerability. I mean --it wasn't a good film, but I can't imagine the mess this would've been if she hadn't been cast.
A lesson in how to adapt, if nothing else.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey
I thought it was supposed to just be a 2 hour S&M porn? One must be fearless and tenacious when pursuing their dreams. If you don't, regret will be your reward.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey
I hate having to be the guy to defend it but it seems to me like most of its biggest critics are people who have not seen the film and don't plan to or haven't even read the book. While I'm sure it probably isn't great I doubt it is the travesty it's being made out to be.
The Duke of Burgundy is out this week which is supposed to be quite good for those that need an alternative S&M film this week.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey
Anything that targets women or girls and is about romance or sex - for women's pleasure, not men's -- tends to engender large amounts of hostility. It's a special kind of hatred.
I've read the first novel, and it's absolute dreck. But so are most of the films made for 15 year old boys that screenwriters gush over.

Dornan also had it in his contract that audiences wouldn't be seeing his schvantz. Charlie woulda showed 'em...

Re: 50 Shades of Grey
Right, despite the source, this is SFW:

(Pornhub's analytics are like the OKCupid blog for the deep end of naughty, it's actually kind of great.)
Anyway, with the gender divide and western society's inability to have an open discussion, you can kind of forgive guys for not knowing if women want to be chained up and spanked while voting and being CEO or what. Occasionally somebody makes a pretty sexually honest film that you can learn from. It wasn't these people or Lars von Trier, however.

Re: 50 Shades of Grey
imho the crux of this is not a matter of western insensibilities; it's simply the source material is devoid of any organic forward momentum. i think it's fairly obvious the challenge comes from the source material.Last edited by asjah8; 03-11-2015, 10:24 PM.life happens
