  • Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The issue just comes down to a lack of story, which in turn is born from a lack of interesting characters.

It's not just an issue in this film, it's an issue in the Force Awakens as well.

To it's credit, the Force Awakens at least had a lighter tone, the more serious tone of Rogue One just can't be taken seriously.

In all honesty, it felt like a piece of fan fiction, and maybe that's the whole problem, it's weighed down by the requirements of fan service.

I've played Rogue One to a few non-Star Wars fan and frankly it bored everyone senseless within 15 minutes.

Isn't it funny how in this industry, despite all this money, there is such a struggle to find a meaningful story, you have this entire Star Wars universe, and no interesting characters or stories within it. Let's hope the Han Solo film is better but it's easy to see that being an exercise in fan service as well.

It's a shame, because the world building has come a long way and the VFX have come a long way, it's just that no one has anything to say.

People over-estimate how interesting the Star Wars (or any fictional) universe is. In order for these films to work, they need Han, Luke, Leia, and Vader driving the plot, or at least Obi-Wan and Vader.

Like every other franchise, SW only works if it follows the primary characters who originally defined it. You can't have entire films dedicated to how Han won his ship or how the Death Star plans were stolen anymore than you can have James Bond spinoff films dedicated to how Moneypenny got her job at MI6.

The Alien franchise cratered when it abandoned Ripley. Now, like Star Wars, it's about fan lip service and "expanding the universe," which is code for not having a plot. Same with the Terminator movies. As soon as they ditched Sarah Conner they became self-parodies.

Hollywood doesn't care because these franchises have global fanbases that will pay money to see anything associated with them. As long as there's no financial incentive to give these movies plots, they will keep getting made.

I've read a bunch of SW spin-off comics and they all had pretty good storylines, from Vader Down to Han & Leia and even Poe Dameron in their own adventures. Even peripheral characters can become interesting leads given good writing, and I'm willing to believe that new characters can also. So it's not that good ideas don't exist -- it's that Rogue One failed to deliver one. Or maybe it started out with a good idea, but something awful happened to it along the way?
