The 3rd Friday the 13th is when Jason gets his hockey mask, so...yeah.
I agree that FRIDAY THE 13TH 3D is the best of its franchise, but DREAM WARRIORS? Blasphemy! NIGHTMARE and NEW NIGHTMARE are the only ones that fully work. DREAM WARRIORS turns into a comedy after the death by television set scene, and thus set this jokey tone for the rest of the series (with the exception of NEW NIGHTMARE). DREAM WARRIORS is still better than 4, 5, 6 and FREDDY VS. JASON*, but I am of the contrarian opinion that NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 2 is actually the third best of the series. Sure, Freddy's powers kind of arbitrarily changed, but it has some of the most surreal dream sequences in the entire series, and Freddy was still relatively scary and mysterious. Jack Sholder is actually a pretty badass director, he's responsible for the classic THE HIDDEN. Also, there's a bunch of hilariously unintentional gay subtext that makes it an entertaining oddity.

      * The 2010 remake does not exist in this dojo.

Can't believe no one said this:

          Return of the King.

Good pick. Both I and II seemed to try too hard at times.

I'm going with Beyond Thunderdome, but only if we're basing this on the perspective of the age we were at release time. I remember liking the Mad Max films as a kid, but when Thunderdome came out, I could finally relate to the series and really loved the story. Now, I'd go with the second one, but I'll never shake the impression the third film had on me.

As much as everyone panned the ewoks/endor storyline, for my age at release, ROTJ was the bomb! Though being pressured by my peers I might have told you Empire was the best (but I'd be lying at the time). Now, Empire is clearly the best film of the whole series.

Also, and I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned, but ROCKY III is by far the best third film in any series, ever. I mean it's Clubber Lang!

I disagree with ROTK being the best of the bunch.

Everything up to the point where the invincible green army shows up is undoubtedly the best the series had to offer, but that point and everything after it was the absolute worst the series had to offer. That film got atrocious very fast and stayed that way until the credits rolled.

I thought BASKET CASE 3 was pretty flippin' amazing (though not as a good as the first).

                        That's because RotK sucked ass.

Snap. You win. BUT, I must say the second was absolutely brilliant as well. Real tough call here, real tough.

See the NEVER SLEEP AGAIN documentary, the majority of Krueger fans prefer DREAM WARRIORS (and they dicuss the subtext of FREDDY'S REVENGE).
