Default Managers as Exec Producers

hey all,

keep hearing that you should be careful to allow your manager to attach himself as an exec producer as condition to setting up your script. anyone have thoughts on this? pros and cons?

thanks.

Your manager should be willing to step off as producer if it's going to make a project difficult to set up with them attached. Period. If they have a track record of produced projects, generally that will help you. If they don't, it most likely won't.

It's hard enough to limit producers on a project without having some manager who won't actually help get the movie made on board. Sure, there are some managers out there who are big enough to bring elements, cast, money, etc., and they really are producing. But when you ask these hyphenates what they're going to do on the movie, 90% or more will just look at you and say, huh?

I find it awkward when people who I'm collaborating with on one level suddenly decide to turn into something else. Like they've decided that they'll get a bigger cut if they're a "this" instead of a "that". And then you feel like you need another lawyer. So now I only collaborate with people who are esablished at what they do. And that sort of thing doesn't happen anymore.

Certainly not if he doesn't have any producing credits.

But it's hard for new writers. You can feel that they've got you over a barrell.

Having people on a project who can look out for your best interests and protect you is a tremendous asset to a writer.

If your manager doesn't have your back, you need a new manager. If your manager does have your back, you want him to be a part of the production.

DramaKing's got it 100% right.

If your manager actually brings something to the table (finance, talent, cred, etc.) and he's onboard as a producer as well, you as a writer have a powerful advocate every step of the way.

We find it's something that, a lot of the time, you can't convince most newer writers about. They usually only get a true sense of this value after having experienced going into production both with and without.
