Default MAN OF STEEL teasers

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/57178

The first features V.O. from Pa Kent (Kevin Costner); the second, Jor-El (Russell Crowe).

Personally, I'm intrigued....

Disclaimer: I liked SUPERMAN RETURNS quite a bit. I think it's a lovely independent art film that just happens to cost $200 million dollars and star Superman. It only fails (and it does so admittedly pretty hard) during the moments when it suddenly remembers its supposed to be a summer tent pole.

That said, I understand why others wouldn't like it. And I understand why WB would want to move in the complete opposite direction and hire someone like Zack Snyder to reboot.

And I don't understand how this is that. From everything I've heard/read, this sounds every bit as "Superman going through an existential crisis" as SUPERMAN RETURNS was, only instead of wrestling with poor decisions and being alone he's now wrestling with... his own sense of purpose, I guess? So that's different, then?

He appears to be a damn good fisherman, though, so there's that.

That was pretty great. I happen to think that Snyder is a perfect match with Superman. It looks like he's going for a more gritty look here, like he did with Dawn Of The Dead remake. Snyder's DOTD has a sloppy script, but a lot of great direction.

Not sure what you mean...there were a couple of small choices I disagreed with, but otherwise I thought it was an effective script.

In what way? I think most otherwise.

Please don't say it's 'cause his zombies don't shuffle like the snore-inducing zombies of yesteryear.

I think James Gunn's DAWN OF THE DEAD script is the best part of that whole movie. It's a movie I don't like, but that's another story I suppose.

Zombies don't run, but that's also why I don't like that movie

Giving zombies the power to speed around is like suddenly giving werewolves the power to fly. As if something was wrong with them before.

I'm as old school zombie fan as you can get (saw NotLD at the drive-in when I was six), and I don't have a problem with running zombies*. If it's a well-done zombie flick, I don't care.

*I'll cop I had a problem swallowing the levitating, rock 'em-sock 'em zombies in Stephen King's otherwise great "Cell", but that was asking a li'l much.

Well, the problem here is two fold IMO. First, something comes along and shakes up the genre and changes the game so much that what came before is blown away. Case in point is the Bond films (Connery included). I used to love the action and the fight scenes. Even campy Moore. But once Bourne came along, all the Bond films just seemed child-like, tame and were rendered obsolete. I loved the gadgets but all of a sudden, after the gritty reality of Bourne they just looked preposterous - even when they were obviously tongue in cheek. When Brosnan came on the scene, I thought he was a gritty Bond but even he appears camp compared to how Greegrass showcased Bourne.

As a result there was no going back. At all. Which is why Casino Royale rightly followed Bourne's lead and featured brutal fight scenes and zero gadgets. The same can be said for the shuffling mummy films of the 40s and the 50s ci fi where the woman stands in a corner, shrieking, before fainting.

So with regards to zombies, Snyder's DotD (prefaced by 28 Days Later) turned the genre on its head, making what went before seem passe. Shuffling zombies 'n' all. It made you realise - as with Bond and co - that what used to pass for good/scary is actually quite laughable.

The second problem is that your werewolf analogy is trying to fix something that isn't broken but, as indicated, the zombie genre clearly was. There was something wrong with the set up - and it's shamblig zombies moving at 1mph and with the strength of a mid sized rat. They are just not scary and not a serious adversary. They only become a therat when you're cornered in a room full of them. Even then you can take a nap before running to the back door - or bargig past them.

DotD (1978) was pitiful waaaaaaaay before the remake made it official. again, all this is IMO. And therefore fact.

That bald, bespectacled guy in the mall? Puh-leeez....

You literally just blew all the good will you earned from TANGO AND CASH in the other thread. That was impressive. You made it look effortless

I mean, I'm going to try to disagree with most of the things you just said as kindly as possible. As much as I love Craig, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE is still the best James Bond movie.

The original DAWN OF THE DEAD is a masterpiece.

Zack Snyder didn't "improve" anything. He changed zombies to the point where they shouldn't be called zombies anymore. Just call them something else and do the same thing. It's fine.

He removed literally my favorite thing about zombies. If it's "Steve vs. One Zombie", I'll probably win. I might even win against two. But eventually, a whole lot of those bastards are gonna gather up around me and all the guns in the world won't matter at that point.

If one single zombie is suddenly terrifying and unstoppable, why do they have to be everywhere in a movie like the DotD remake? What's the point? Three or four seem like they'd work just fine if you're a writer and you're trying to kill a whole bunch of unlikeable characters.

I dunno. Agree to disagree, I guess.
