    Re: The Revenant

Watched this last night - was absolutely blown away by it. Reminded me of what Coppola talked about in Hearts of Darkness, how he wanted Apocalypse to be more than an art film, how he wanted it to be lurid and shocking and sexy and exciting. Well The Revenant does this in spades.

DiCaprio is great; although if he gets the Oscar it'll be for endurance as much as anything - personally I think it's harder to pull off a quiet, measured performance but Oscar seems to favour the whole Daniel Day Lewis thing of lopping off an arm to win. For me Tom Hardy was the stand-out; he managed to wring every ounce of sympathy for a dislikeable character. Despite all that he does it's hard not to empathise with someone who just wants to get out of this godforsaken hell.

The whole thing reminded me a lot of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian - which I understand someone is adapting. Whoever's making that, I wish them luck - it's going to be a huge ask to compete with this.

      Re: The Revenant

I just saw this and thought it was bleak, boring an depressing.

The opening battle was good, the bear scene was exciting and scary and I thought Tom Hardy acted DiCaprio out of the picture (LDC was OK, though it was a hardly a stretch for him), but for me the rest was an indulgent snooze fest.

I envy those of you who thought it was a good movie.

No probs. It's only a movie.

I'm just feeling annoyed at the loss of two and a half hours of my time.

Agree with you here. Great scenes here and there and a spectacularly shot film, but as a story didn't really grasp me... Concussion, I think, was a more interesting film (and not why you'd think; I'm on Stacy Dash's side on this one). It kept me in tune from start to finish for some odd reason...

I just about came out of my skin when the bear was breathing on him and licked his face. I thought he was going to EAT his face and I had to look away.

I also wanted to say that Domhnall Gleeson is not getting enough press for his role, and it is an insult that he wasn't invited to the Golden Globes, seeing as how both Ex Machina and The Revenant were nominated.

Gleeson is my new favorite actor and I think he is headed for big things and will be the new "Leo DiCaprio" for the present generation.

Great cast through and through, to be sure. Hope someone carries home, or several someones carry home, an Oscar.

I haven't read all the previous comments on this, but for me the bottom line is that it felt like high-end torture porn.

Beautifully made (albeit with too many self-consciously "artistic" shots, IMHO), well-acted, engaging, and intense.... but in the end, what was the point, other than to "hold a mirror up to (brutal and beautiful) nature"? Is that enough?

Saw it, loved it as torturous as it was, it was still contemplative. The pyramid of animal skulls. The movie has pretty much stayed with me since.

The cinematography, sound and soundtrack. Hardy, Leo and the rest of the cast were really, really good.

                                Joe Banks,
It's funny you mentioned Dances With Wolves, as I was describing the movie to my mom. And the only reference I thought she would get was Dances With Wolves.
