  • Dirty Grandpa

The reviews of this film are consistent... horrible. There's only one writer so you can't blame all the re-writes. There's eight producers who I assume saw the script and gave notes. So the question is... how does a horrible movie like this get made ? It's probably a multi-faceted, seventeen part answer.

"Robert De Niro and Zac Efron's raunchy comedy "Dirty Grandpa- cleaned up $660,000 at more than 2,000 locations on Thursday night. It beat Chloe Grace Moretz's "The 5th Wave,- which earned $475,000 at 2,297 U.S. locations."

Lionsgate's "Dirty Grandpa,- an R-rated comedy starring DeNiro and Efron as a grandfather and grandson frolicking in Florida during spring break, is expected to take in $10 million to $12 million at 2,900 locations.
    That's why.

Isn't there a very successful movie with a pretty girl who got sperm in her hair? And another with a lustful young man who put his penis inside a pie? Maybe they have something to do with it.

Im confused about this comment, and i in no way i'm trying to be rude perhaps i just missed it, or i don't see the link.

But, both "something about mary" and "american pie" are High rated movies.. So what do those two highly rated films have to do with a poorly rated one? Are you saying it got made because its in the same genre? I meAn...

Again not being a d*ck, i have not seen dirty grandpa but the comparison seems a bit odd if its based on ratings.

I'm going to guess it went something like this. The script gets in the hands of De Niro's agent who knows he's looking to do a comedy. De Niro isn't sure but hears it's on the Blacklist so it must be doing okay, plus he gets to play a cranky Grandpa so he says he'll do it.

The studio isn't sure but hears that De Niro is attached. So they say they'll do it. But they need another younger "name actor"

They approach Efron. He isn't sure but hears he'll get to work with De Niro. So he says he'll do it.

And that's how movies get made.

I'd love to find the script that made the Black List and see how similar it is to what ended up on the screen. As for the comparison to American Pie and Some about Mary, those were funny, funny movies. By all accounts this one isn't in the least.

CrissCross asked "how does a horrible movie like this get made?". I was merely suggesting that the popularity of those other two 'vulgar' movies may have been a motivation for the Dirty Grandpa producers, regardless of how poorly the end result compares.

Criss didn't say anything about it being vulgar, he said it was horrible... I read it just as "why did something this bad get made" I don't think he was saying the vulgarity is what made it bad.

Either way, still haven't seen it... Doesn't call me, but I may have to now. Thx for the reply.

i'm all about about irreverent comedies but have no desire to see this film, though I would love to check out the original script. I had the link to all the 2011 BL scripts but seem to have lost it.

I know that CrissCross didn't say anything about Dirty Grandpa being 'vulgar'. I'm assuming that it is 'vulgar'. And I'm simply suggesting that There's Something About Mary and American Pie are two prime examples of how popular and profitable a 'vulgar' movie can be; and that maybe the producers of Dirty Grandpa fancied themselves a slice of Mary's 'vulgar' and highly lucrative pie.

But why would you make that jump to vulgarity anyway? It's not germane to the OP's original question about how bad movies get made.

The OP didn't ask "how bad movies get made". They asked "how does a horrible movie like this get made?".

Do you really think that the enduring popularity of vulgar movies (such as 'Mary' and 'Pie') has no relevance to why the "horrible" Dirty Grandpa was made? I can only presume that you have never been a male teenager; or a producer looking for a cut of the lucrative male teenager demographic.

I'm not so much looking forward to Al Pacino in Pervy Uncle.

But does this "lucrative male teenager demographic" really have a burning desire to see a movie about creepy old guys getting off with hot young women and saying F-bombs? I doubt it somehow.

Actually I think there is a potentially funny premise in having a young man discover that his venerable, kindly old grandfather, who everyone's looked up to, has some raunchy desires on his bucket list. But it doesn't sound like the movie was set up that way, haven't seen it.

I think the young adult + grandparent road movie is a tricky genre, it seems like an easy way to get them together to "really know each other" and push each other's buttons. But easy to run out of steam along the way. I really wanted to like The Guilt Trip, I thought Streisand's performance was excellent; but the scenes were surprisingly flat, along with the revelations.
