Some great posts here - but I still think querying producers is a waste of time. But hey, if it works - more power to you.

I'm going to tell the next producer who buys my script after a cold query that you said that.

Interesting thread... Different people have different skill-sets and I do believe that fortune usually favors the bold... writers are sometimes very meek.

The guy at the club willing to take 99 no's to get that 1 yeah, he will get that yeah eventually... and that yeah could lead to the claps

That being said, newb writers should put all energy into writing quality s***.

Understanding when your specs/samples are undeniably written with a very high quality, that's the most important skill-set a newb needs IMHO...

From Mr. Jones:

If your script is ready, you will not have any trouble getting an agent and/or manager.

Your scripts are ready for producers to see them when you can get repped.

---

Yes, theoretically. Certainly that is the most popular theory out there. But reading these threads, you realize just how much of a crap shoot it is. I've read more than once about writers who queried the SAME rep THREE times on the SAME script before being asked for a read and eventually getting repped...um, OK, same logline, same script, same rep.. seriously, what gives? I've read interviews with agents that started with, So I was sitting at my desk, deleting queries as per usual, when one day, I just so happened to actually open one, on a whim...

Sometimes our future depends not on the script but on that WHIM. Or, should I say, the two combined. So I say hit everybody, agents, managers and producers. Maybe the agent is having a bad day, but the producer just got laid and is feeling generous. You just never know.

Huh? And I've been worrying about querying the same company a month later with a different log?!

I know professional writers who are staffed on shows who still can't get a manager or agent. Nutty right?
No one is saying that you won't get your script read here and there by querying production companies.

No one.

What people are saying is that the overwhelming majority of the time, you will not get your script read at the same level as a decent rep will, thereby radically increasing the probability of failure. The first level of readers is there to say no. You don't want those people reading your script.

The people who are arguing that the read off a cold query is equal to the read given to a rep with a relationship with the company are flat out wrong.
