  • Hidden, Overlooked Gems

Please note the word "hidden" in the title. Don't list the billion dollar behemoth Transformers because you think people don't give it enough credit.

    Here's my list:

    Cohen & Tate
    Night of the Creeps
    Dog Soldiers
    Phantasm II
    Swimming With Sharks

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) Seriously, the only Godzilla film you need to see. Clever (the hospital scene is my favorite Godzilla moment evah) with the best effects in the franchise. Very cool soundtrack, and the jokes translate exceptionally well.

Miracle Mile (1998) An harrowing love story that works best if you walk into it blind. Music by Tangerine Dream.

The Convent (2001) While it's hard to top the opening scene (featuring a Catholic school girl getting her kill spree on), The Convent is a clever, funny 80s-style horror film. It also features Coolio as a cop, and Adrienne Barbeau being the most bad-assed GILF ever.

The Horde (2010) French zombie film that plays like Left4Dead. Cops and gangsters need to team up to get out of an infested apartment complex. Very, very well-done for such a low budget. Once it gets rolling, it doesn't stop with the white-knuckles until the end credits.

End of the Line (2007) A handful of folks trapped in a stalled subway train realize that they're being stalked by an apocalyptic cult getting their jihad on. At times a li'l goofy, it still overcomes its seriously low budget deliver with the creepy. Features a seemingly ambiguous ending that actually really delivers if you've been paying attention. The rare horror film where it seems the filmmaker didn't think his target demographic was a bunch of idiots.

Alien Raiders (2009) A bunch of paramilitaries take a supermarket hostage overnight...and then the shit really hits the fan. Owes a lot to the equally fun sci-fi actioner The Hidden* (1987).

    *Heh heh.

Felon - probably the most accurate prison movie out there
Ta Guk Gi - Korean war movie about two brothers. I probably spelled it wrong.
Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human - narrated by David Hyde Pearce, a "documentary" for aliens about how humans mate. Complete with men dressed as sperm running down a track.

and THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD. DAMMIT.

Tae Guk Gi is awesome, and I'm adding Good Bad Weird to my queue.

                Here's a few for a pile...

                FRESH
                RED ROCK WEST
                CRUMB
                MIRRORMASK
                SEVEN BEAUTIES
SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER... AND SPRING
                THE STRAIGHT STORY

And it's not exactly hidden, but I think ALL THAT JAZZ doesn't get enough love.

I immediately thought of THE MAGDELENE SISTERS and Laura had already listed it. At least someone else saw it!

Also, THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS. It won a slew of awards, but I don't think it's gotten the audience it deserves.

                          I'd add
State & Main and Scotland, PA.

Maybe more forgotten than hidden, but gems.

a few already mentioned that i too would endorse - fresh, the madgelene sisters, the straight story

                            adding to the list:
                            brother from another planet http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087004/
                            woman in the dunes http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058625/

                            the celebration http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154420/

these are all great surprises with stories that will always stick in my head.

It would be nice if people could write a brief explanation of why the film is interesting, and IMDB link is cool as well.

Reflecting Skin - Vampires, serials killers and pedophilia from the perspective of a clueless little kid, in the 50's American countryside. This was a minor arthouse hit around Europe in 1990. Visually extremely handsome, starring also the young Viggo Mortensen. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100469/

Swallowtail Butterfly - A young girl's mother dies and the girl is adopted by a hooker, leading to many strange adventures. Japanese film from the mid-90's, which is a wildly original, beautifully poetic and brutally violent mix of different genres. Has gathered a small cult following over the years. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117797/

Abandoned - Nobody seemed to even notice when this haunted house horror film came out a few years ago. The Russian-based story has some *great* visuals and atmosphere, and truly frightening moments. It also goes all Mullholland Drive on your ass in the 3rd act, which made it less satisfying overall. Still, anyone who enjoys genuinely creepy atmosphere should check this out. It was a very divisive film, therefore the low IMDB score: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475937/

Hardware - The love-it-or-hate-it scifi-horror flick about a killer robot on the loose, from 1990. I was in the love-camp for this movie. It's a fascinating low budget exploitation movie that on the other hand recycles every post-apocalyptic cliche there is, but also has many memorable, original, artful touches that make it wholly unique. It's been 10 years since I've watched it the last time, but I still remember many scenes very vividly. The Director's Cut DVD came out recently, I intend to buy it and re-visit the film soon. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099740/
