Well, as a woman I'd say, if you think this is the "rule," you haven't been around enough women who actually have self esteem. Because women with self esteem don't feel viciously jealous of goodlooking or hot women.

And if you look to Reality TV for your education in the ways of woman -- I feel bad for you.

Jolie appeals to women because she plays strong female characters -- not because of her charity work.

I was kidding about the reality TV stuff, but the other stuff I believe. I am only talking in wide ranging generalities, but I am pretty certain more people (not just women) have self esteem issues than those that don't.

My wife made me watch the 2nd one, and I was absolutely appalled. I honestly tried going in with an open mind, but moment by moment the film closed me up all on its own.

My main issue is probably the very attribute that makes this particular vampire saga so popular: an average looking girl who is self centered, self absorbed, spoiled, ungrateful and constantly mopey, basically someone who has not a single attractive personality trait, suddenly has the 2 most handsome, capable men on the planet fall madly in love with her to the point they end up fighting over her. What woman (or man, rolls being reversed) wouldn't want that? Bella literally makes NO positive actions in the 2nd film (only one I saw) - she ditches her friends, is constantly moping to Jacob or throwing herself at Edward, lying to her father (who backs he

The real theme of this property seem to be "if you are totally average with no desirable personality traits whatsoever, you don't need to change a thing about yourself and DESERVE to have the most desirable men in the world risk everything all just for you".

Twilight certainly isn't the only culprit in such unearned wish-fulfillment (see every slovenly, ignorant Kevin James/Adam Sandler character's sexy, smart, sensitive significant other), but it's up there among the most egregious, which may be another reason it's the most popular.
12 Angry Men is proof that all you need is a bunch of good actors, good characters, clear motivations and a table. -- Ben Odgren; Go into the Story

Yeah I think the thing that upsets a lot of people is that she is so passive. Usually in American flicks, whether a cheesy rom-com or a femme action flick, women take more active control of their destiny. They have jobs, passions, interests, things to fight for and die for --besides a guy.

            She's really pretty anti-modern.

And what SC111 said: chicks like chicks who have more to do on-screen than be the wife / gf / mother for a bout 5 seconds of screen time. So many talented actresses wasted in such roles.

I'm about to watch GIRL IN PROGRESS with Eva Mendez. I hope it's great, because it's about time this woman got her own film.

ETA: I just saw on IMBD that GIRL got mostly crappy reviews. Oh well!

You keep skimming over the point. Twilight - the novel - was HUGE. Harry Potter huge. Fifty Shades huge.

They could have used cardboard cutouts for actors - I'm still not sure they didn't - and the audience would have come. In the millions. Just like they did for the books.

As for the pretty girl / plain girl thing...* Good grief. Movies have been letting ordinary guys snag the hottest chick on the block FOREVER. It works both ways - it's just that HW execs have only recently stopped appealing almost exclusively to 16 year old boys.

Holy carp...he does! Someone needs to get on that project. Back in the 70s there was an old National Lampoon book called "Bored of the Rings." Surprised no one has dusted it off already.

Twilight is successful because teenage girls are stupid.

I tend to think the films and the books found a unique way to tap into the young feminine psyche. Look, guys aren't as up on this but there's a definite vulnerability females are clued into at an early age. It starts with "true gentlemen should open doors" and continues on through "that box weighs 70 pounds and I don't have the upperbody strength to lift it". So vulnerability is somewhat of a cued instinct.

While I agree the character Bella was a little passive, I think that aspect makes her identifiable to young teenage females just learning this role of vulnerability in life. Also, she's a character who can go to school just like everyone else and somehow this mysterious and dynamic thing is going to happen just because she's being herself... And then there's the bit about two guys fighting over her... I mean, really, when you think about it, you quickly realize the stories are tailor made for young teenage girls, so why wouldn't they respond to it?

It's no different than Transformers being tailor made to appeal to teenage boys.

It is possible to understand why a film is popular, but it is also normal to wonder out loud whether the film itself is well made, well cast, and so on, and whether, on its own merit, aside from its popularity as a previous IP, it stands its ground.

Of course scores of Sex and the City fans were going to see the movie, they just wanted to be reunited with those women they loved for 90 minutes. Of course people are going to see Batman, Spiderman, James Bond, etc. They love the characters and the premise, no matter how many times the actors change.

But then there are films that transcend the fan base. LOTR for instance, I thought was close to a masterpiece. Every single actor was top notch, the battle scenes some of the most epic ever, the scenery mind blowing, the score mesmerizing, the passion of the fllmmakers evident every step of the way, there wasn't a false note anywhere. I think it is a major cinematic achievement. I doubt TWILIGHT will ever hold up to that kind of scrutiny, no matter how many screaming teenage fans flood the box office. Or TRANSFORMERS, or any other number of hugely successful hits that don't necessarily mean the film is actually "good."

As for plain guy / plain girl, traditionally the nerd who gets the hot chick (think Woody Allen, for goodness sake), is typically smart and funny. Women do actually like that in real life. If Seth Rogan and Kristen were put to a personality contest, um, there would be no contest... All those Apatow heroes with their flabby bellies and their Jew-fros, are a total contrast to the traditional Hollywood Leading Man, but it's in some way believable because of their personalities.

OK, I did say in *some* way

Great point, asjah. G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Battleship are atrociously awful films geared solely toward teenage boys.

What do teen boys want? Highly visual arcade-action films with smokin' hot female leads like Sienna Miller, Megan Fox and Brooklyn Decker.

A story? Unnecessary. Just like the gonzo porn they ogle on the web all day.
I'm never wrong. Reality is just stubborn.
