  • Script Shadow Shafts "slaughter"

In the name of transparancy: I know Nathan Brookes, the co-writer of this script personally. I've read and given him notes on several of his and Bobby's scripts (not this one). And I've been loathe to tread on Carson, because at one time I considered him a pal and have given him the benefit of the doubt many times. But this is beyond the pale.

Today Carson reviewed an OUTDATED DRAFT of "Slaughter" which has gone through many, many rewrites. Nathan doesn't even know which draft Carson read. Well, Carson hated it. The commentators hate it too. But the point is, Carson didn't have permission. Nathan (and Bobby) told Carson NOT to review this draft, and they even offered to have him review the current draft that the writers worked on. He refused. According to Nathan, they have threatened Carson with legal action if he doesn't take it down. I repeat, Carson was specifically told NOT to run this review, and he did anyway. Nathan has no idea how Carson even got his hands on it.

I know firsthand that Nathan is very upset about this, and he is sure that another writer who has worked on this script (as well as the writer's reps) won't be too happy about it either as this writer just set up another big project. And I guess I've burned my bridges with Carson as well with this post. But I'm standing up for my friend, and that is the right thing to do.

Not sure why Carson would pursue this even when asked not to.

I cannot comment on Carson's motivations or agenda. But I was shocked.

This is what Bobby had to say:

I'm just gonna say that when you sell a script and are then contracted to rewrite it, you have to make changes the producers want (especially when you're not Andrew Kevin Walker) and then when talent is attached you have to make more changes and then new producing partners come on board and they want their ideas in the movie it's a process to get to green light and the difference a pay check and not a pay check. Then you get fired and a new writer is hired to make the changes you didn't, the guy is doing his job.

We didn't want this script reviewed, I'm not even sure which draft it is as there were so many and so many other writers involved and we even offered OUR draft to be reviewed as that was OUR original voice but Carson went ahead with a rewritten to hell draft. That really makes sense when learning the craft!

Yeah, I've been watching this one develop in the comments and on twitter. Makes for uncomfortable reading.

The writer posted this into the comments:

          And Carson replied:

I thought you said you'd rather just go with this draft to be reviewed. Sorry I misunderstood. Either way, this review is going to get "slaughtered" at the end of the day. So all of this will be but a fever dream.

I can't speak for Bobby, but I am in direct contact with Nathan. He is furious. And that's stating it mildly.

              D|ck move.

It's clear Eads sought out this script specifically to trash the writers. He's stated that he doesn't typically enjoy horror but he chooses to read a fvcking torture porn script. Really? You hate horror but maybe you'll enjoy extreme horror...?

It's just proof that Eads doesn't give a sh|t about writers. And that he's resorted to using his site to "one up" anyone who trashes his motives.

Limama could you ask Nathan to post the message he send Carson. So we can see if it's possible that there could have been a misunderstanding.

                I personally don't think so.

I think he likes being controversial. Hmm, people will love this movie so I'll trash it.

People hate this script so I'll call it one of the best of 2012.

Even me, Chief, #TeamCarson on Done Deal, can't defend him anymore. All he does is reply with smilies and doesn't take a single complaint seriously.

I have asked Nathan to chime in. I believe he's a member here as well.

The back and forth suggests the writers knew the review was coming, and even offered Carson a draft to review. Is that the case?

At this point, I think the real shock would be if Carson did something that *didn't* screw over other writers in shameless pursuit of his own self-interests.

There was no misunderstanding. His intention was to "slaughter" these writers in public.

                          Re: Script Shadow Shafts "slaughter"

I can empathize. One of my project's, BULLET RUN, has undergone multiple rewrites over the years with different producers and directors. Right now it's set in Iran, but originally it was set in the U.S., then Morocco, then China.

Last year, I read a "review" online of an early Morocco draft and the analysis was worthless with regards to the version that exists today. Having someone expose a project you're neck-deep in to the rest of the world, for no valuable reason, is infuriating. I should clarify, this wasn't Script Shadow and somebody had the reviewer pull down his blog post. But it's a practice which is completely anti-writer and needs to stop.

Carson (Eads) has pretty much broken one of his remaining (tacit) rules:

He would not review a script if the writer asked him not to.

So he's acknowledging a misunderstanding... acknowledging he should pull it... and isn't doing it until he's sure everyone's had a chance to read it?

                              Wow.
