The West Wing was written by a great writer. And I've watch each episode 5-7 times or more on some and if you think about it, he elevates the writers to the policy makers which is just not accurate. He's got like 5 people doing the job of 100 and they all stay at their job way longer than in real life.

They love to have it be some kind of job that requires words - like developing that perfect pitch that wins the day. And, then what they actually want to do - their true calling is try write that serious novel that has an impact on the world. But, they are stuck with this high paying corporate job, slinging words they don't care about.

You jest, but that would actually make for an interesting premise. There have been dramas and docus about that, where one member of the couple is a porn star or prostitute, but not so much in romcoms I don't think.

Anyway, the point is, there are cliche fictional jobs, some responding to some sort of social or political ideal (I doubt Kathryn Hepburn would ever have played a kindergarten teacher, but then again I could be wrong), some just lacking in originality, but either way, job setting can be a good way to add a little excitement to a script even if it's not a workplace story.

There was that movie with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Besides the fact that she has short term amnesia, which already elevates it to a more high concept story, he's also a marine biologist dealing with quirky sea creatures who do things like puke their guts out on sexually ambiguous assistants, which add some very comedic moments + it's set in Hawaii which gives it that extra glow. So right off the bat, there are some interesting elements thrown in. Beats resorting to some cute 2-year-old peeing their pants so the cute teacher can show off her maternal side.

I got it now. I didn't read your original post close enough. I think most people think of teachers as self-sacrificing (struggling) and giving, so when they want that kind of character it's a good niche' to put them in. They do the same with male characters (make them teachers).

it is an interesting dynamic, you have a young sexy woman, you get children for the comedy, but the women is also single and not a mother, so she available for romance

those quirky kid moments, without the baggage and the woman can be young and do crazy stuff...

Comedy + young woman + romance + kids = money?

I think the dog is a different dynamic than kids

maybe the dog signifies someone that has trouble in relationships and the children relate to a need for matrimony or stability?

you know what they say about having a gun in the 1st act?

They are sometimes a package deal. I just saw a movie recently where the dog and a little girl were used to tug at our heart strings. Art of Racing in the Rain. There was also another dog in the park movie that used the exact same device. It works every time. It really doesn't matter the profession. Female protagonists are usually caring and misunderstood.......or they were a mess and selfish...then shown the light...and are now caring. Whether it's a kindergarten teacher or a jaded businesswoman who doesn't have time to date, it usually goes down the same garden paths.

with fade in to fade out, studios are writing commercially... anything not produced by a studio is up in the air, even at that it's really the notes and development that can fail.

if you had a studio head or exec or whatever in here I'm sure they'd say something like: it doesn't matter what has be done before, it matters what makes money ...which is basically what audiences empathize with

as for female protag being Business women... in the 80s there were a lot. My guess would be that it signifies independence and to be appreciated for their femininity... usually it's packaged with the fish out of water structure of self discovery, sexuality

guess the dog is the protagonist in the movie? ... wonder what his character arc is and what emotional problems the dog overcomes

The dog seemed to be the narrator. He probably had an arc, but I wasn't paying as much attention as I was to the human arcs of the family he was with.
