In the trades today - Will Smith, his spawn, M. Night Shamalamadingdong... and Gary Whitta's script:

Big congratulations, and with Smith in the lead, it will be big. Whatever you think of Night, he's a great director (who just needs great material) - so this may be a new day for Night.

Then he's making a mistake by teaming with Whitta.

How is Shamylan a good director? 1 good movie in 9 does not a good director make.

I don't count unbreakable as a good movie. Potential to be a good movie? Maybe, but that ending ruined it for me. How many good movies end with some text about how the hero went and called the police on his nemesis?

(correct me if the details are off I saw it like when I was 12 or something)

Yhea, but who could agree on what two?

I thought The Village was his best film.

And I thought The Happening was really clever, he did a lot with very little.

                    M.Night---

One good movie, a few ok movies (that's ok, not OK).

Most people, except me, probably saw the big reveal in The Village coming from a mile away. I didn't see it coming. So when it happened, it was worth the price of admission and a little more. So I count that his 'best' ok movie. The other oks: Unbreakable and Signs, though both were actually disappointing. He comes up with really interesting premises, but he's only been able to hit one out of the park (off a screwball pitch, I think....)

Let's hope this one will be a return to form.

Come on, you can't deny when the guy laid down in front of the lawn mower in The Happening, that wasn't awesome.

I agree with the 2... And while I wasn't crazy about The Happening, that one scene was cool/hilarious

Shoulda got one of those mowers where when you get off the seat it dies... tsk tsk.

                      Sorry to derail. Carry on.

God damn, congrats to Gary! Awesome news!

A Will Smith film is pretty much the Holy Grail - especially if it's franchise-able.

You have to be able to separate his directing skills from the resulting film. What kills his films isn't the direction - which is always great, even when it serves a crappy script - it's the crappy scripts. The camera angles and movement and composition (etc) in THE VILLAGE is great - and at times almost makes the silly idea work. But the silly script always trips him up.

SIGNS is creepy and suspenseful and all of the film direction works - what doesn't work are aliens who can be killed by water who try to invade a planet that is mostly water... and don't even think to wear pants!

                            Give him a good script?

                              Congrats to Gary.

I haven't seen all of his films, but SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE, and SIGNS were good movies, imo. I agree with what Bill said, good direction -- that you gotta be able to separate from the resulting film.
