Sometimes I'll remember the movies I loved and TV shows I loved before I thought about doing this for a living. Sometimes I got lost and try to think of ideas that are more in line with current comedies that are out now -- forgetting what inspired me when I was young. And while they "don't make those movies or TV now" -- I think well screw that. I can still write it. If I don't write some of these movies, then the 8 year old me in 2020 can't see them and become a writer in 2035? You know?

I'll try to list some inspirations that mean a lot to me off the top of my head

    FILM

    Better off Dead
    Clerks
    Mallrats, Kevin Smith in general
    One Crazy Summer
    Blues Brothers
    Vacation
    Halloween
    F13 movies
    Aliens
    Terminator movies
    Rocky - Stallone in general
    Arnold Movies
    Robocop
    Short Circuit
    Police Academy Movies
    Animal House
    Scream
    Goonies
    Indiana Jones
    3 Amigos
    Back to the Future
    Ferris and Hughes collection
    Beverly Hills Cop
    Airplane
    Gremlins
    Ghostbusters
    Coming to America
    Overboard
    Revenge of Nerds
    Wkd at Bernie's
    Harry Met Sally

    TV

    Cheers
    Transformers
    Thundercats
    Star Trek Original
    V mini series
    Married with Children
    Pete and Pete
    ALF
    Knight Rider
    Punky Brewster
    Saved By the Bell
    A-Team
    Quantum Leap
    The West Wing

My point is don't forget your dreams. I got sucked up by the business of emulating the current trends -- and sometimes we have to remember our 8-12 year old selves and find that voice and inspiration.

Bring that back to your writing and ideas. It may open doors you forgot about. And I will do the same.

    Re: Inspiration

In New Zealand we've just celebrated 60 years of TV (1st June). I was driving the 1500-0230 shift the Saturday night before and the talkback host was inviting people (lonely, crazies mostly) to ring in and share their childhood TV memories. Brought back a lot of memories and yeah, i think my childhood viewing set in place where I journey to now in my mind.

I don't understand half of what you said -- must be the accent -- but it seemed like you said "yeah TV!"

            Re: Inspiration

I don't watch much scripted television anymore, but some from days gone by that stick in my memory.

Twin Peaks...when it came out there was nothing else like it on television. Word of mouth was so incredibly high, that they re-broadcast the first 6 episodes so that people who had not seen it from the beginning could have that chance...(no internet or streaming in those days).

I was in a ski-rental at Lake Tahoe with some people when I first saw the Simpsons...it was season one I think. I can still recall the episode. The Simpsons family ended up in group therapy with electric shock buttons to shock each other when they felt criticized.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFCgz959ARY

I can't find the clip from Cheers, but I can remember when Kirstie Allie was fuming because she was in love with Sam instead of the rich guy. She notes that Sam is the opposite of sophistication and class and points out that Sam is even missing a button from his shirt. Sam looks down. "It's not missing, it just makes it easier to scratch my stomach."

Note to self. Take time, don't use work computer...

I think I'm probably a little older than some of you and was raised in the golden age on kids TV. Being a Kiwi we were also exposed to US, UK and Aussie TV and even some Canadian stuff.

              Kids fare
US Land of the lost (original not the shite movie)
              US Land of the Giants
              US Tunnel through time
UK Dr Who (the inimitable Tom Baker, not the other wannbes)
              UK Sapphire and steel
              UK Space 1999
              US Gilligan's Island
              Canada The beachcombers
              US Star trek (of course)
US Voyage to the bottom of the Sea
              US Hogan's Heroes
US Lancelot secret chimp - there was an episode of this that ****ing scarred me!
              UK Dad's Army

              More Adult
              TV UFO
              Movie Too late the hero
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid
              Movie Krakatoa, east of Java
              Movie Vanishing point
              Movie Breaking away
              Movie Cool hand Luke
              TV Survivors
              TV Blake's 7
              TV Six million dollar man

When thinking about it in the past I've always found it odd that four of my favorite movies of the period (and seen on TV at the time between the ages of 8 and maybe 12) feature the hero dying. Yep written one of those

Possibly Dr Who was the original driver for me to attempt writing. Even as a kid I hated the ****ing Darleks. Who's scared of an enemy where to escape them you only need to climb stairs or walk on a wet lawn?

                Rocky inspired me to write.

I watch Quantum Leap on line-NBC currently. Great show and message
