2nd - why assume every actress wants to do and is offered romcoms? she never fit the profile. she's a late bloomer.
    3rd - lame?!!!???
4th - she's getting more movie sex than any romcom queen ever has

coincidentally - last night on TCM was "classic" cougar night with:
    the graduate
    a cold wind in august
(which i checked out b/c it was the only one i hadn't seen)
    summer of '42
love, pain and the whole damn thing
the roman spring of mrs stone
Nikee, did you actually even READ my post ? I said Moore is drawn to edgier material than many other actresses of her stature, thus voila, more sex and nudity. And I said that a lot of romcoms are pretty lame, and that actresses like Moore and Theron have chosen to stay away from them and position themselves differently than, say, a Kate Hudson.

And Moore was in at least one romantic comedy, with Pierce Brosnan, and it was actually on the funny side.

She plays a brilliant uptight lawyer and he plays a brilliant charming laid-back lawyer and they become opponents on a case for which they go to Ireland, get drunk in village festival, let their hair down and wake up married via some local custom. PG sex but kinda cute and smart. Brosnan has charm to spare, for sure. In the film Moore has a mom who's a very funny supporting character.

Well, in my scripts my chicks don't typically go around getting laid every five minutes, but they are not uptight, they are coooool

it's not how often they get laid, it's about the how they do it and with whom that matters. make people/your readers squirm!

i'll never forget when that 10 yr old boy got in the bathtub with nicole kidman - squirm! -- and then later (you could hear a pin drop in the audience) when she tucked him in bed, i whispered, "lock the door" a little too loud in the theater.

Well I have a kick-ass scorpion attack that I think kind of rocks. The black leggy beast crawls all the way up her body, under her hair as she's brushing it in the mirror, then around to her neck and... ARGH! Definitely cringe moment.

After a brief but horrifying battle involving a metal hair clamp and a hand towel, she emerges the victor, strides out of the bathroom empowered and confident, walks down the hall, into a large conference room full of powerful men and ---calmly resolves the Middle East conflict. SLAM DUNK BABY!

Sure beats talking about Gucci and Prada.

To answer an ancillary question posed earlier in this thread...

Zach Efron ("High School Musical"; "17 Again") is one of Gen Y and Z's leading men to watch, IMO. He has real acting talent ("Charlie St. Cloud", "Me and Orson Welles"), but his problem is he is too pretty to be taken seriously right now. Sound familiar? Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise when they were young and starting out.

If he navigates his career well, he will end up being the next Brad, or Leonardo. But this is going to require him to take more edgier roles and to completely go against type to break out of his pretty boy, Disney stigma. This is why he turned down the remake of "Footloose". He thought it was too similar to HSM, and Hairspray, and wants to let the general public know he can emote without having to sing his lines.

There are other young actors of course, but he is one to keep an eye on.

As for a new generation of females...

All you have to do is look to TV shows that are aimed at the teen crowd... And even a little younger:

                        Blake Lively
                        Leighton Meester
                        Amanda Cosgrove
                        Selena Gomez
                        Bridgit Mendler
                        Victoria Justice

Most of these young women are approaching, or are over 18, so they can take on edgier, more adult roles like Anne Hathaway did in "Havoc" to break away from their "tween" stardom. Of course, there are many others I did not list, so this is just a small sampling of who's up and coming for the sake of discussion.
                        Positive outcomes. Only.

                          Re: Julianne Courgar Moore

Hmm. The problem, as I see it, is more and more acting talent is being pulled from these Midwich Cuckoo Mickey Mouse kid type talent pools. History has not been kind to most child actors as they age, so I'm not terribly optimistic about all these tween sensations making crossovers into legitimate thespian careers. Harrison Ford had a few bit parts, but he was a carpenter who built some cabinets for George Lucas' home before he was in AMERICAN GRAFITTI. Jack Nicholson was a studio gofer. Humphrey Bogart was in the navy. But put aside raw acting talent for a second. I mean as much as I like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, I think both of them are a step removed from the men's men that preceded them. Zac Efron is even prettier and softer than they are. Take a look around at the big names: Michael Cera, Shia Lebouef, Robert Pattinson etc. Where are the A-list leading men? And the women keep getting cuter, but it's been a while since I've seen a young actress with real chops. I don't see this generation's Meryl Streep, or this generation's Kate Winslet for that matter. The thing is, I KNOW that the talent is out there, male and female. But the studios are giving all the juiciest roles to the flavors of the month, instead of developing the type of talent that will last decades.

A lot of experienced actors (and actresses) say one of the major flaws of the current studio system is there are no mentors for young and up and coming talent. So, young talent is often left to the mercy of the studios as to what kind of roles they cast them in... And as you said, this is why a lot of young actors don't go on to have lasting careers (the roles don't allow them to showcase their real talent, or build longevity).

No mentors goes double for female actresses, too. I don't want to get into gender politics and prejudices (within genders), but you don't hear about Meryl Streep taking a Vanessa Hudgens under her wing, for example, whereas you do hear about Leo taking Efron under his wing and advising him on certain roles and other aspects of the business. I'm sure it happens with female actresses, but you just don't hear it as much as with men... Or maybe it doesn't?

sex with a scorpion... things that make you go, hmmm!

while i must agree with you for the most part, gwai -- george clooney did a lot of (mostly crappy) tv in his youth. he didn't blossom until he left the small screen. so there are excepts to the tv crossover bit but...

                              another TANGENT --
more and more mature and award winning women actors are moving to the smaller screen for decent work, especially with cable channels.

Yeah, there are definitely exceptions to what I'm talking about. And I can name plenty of great recent performances by actors and actresses under 25. Emile Hirsch in INTO THE WILD. Paul Dano in THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Ellen Page in HARD CANDY (betcha thought I was gonna say JUNO!). Q'orianka Kilcher in THE NEW WORLD. etc. etc. But as far as the way the industry is trending... we'll be seeing Justin Bieber starring as Rick in a CASABLANCA remake one of these days.
