Hi, guys. Here's my situtation. I just graduated from college and moved to LA. I got a job at Fox TV through a temp agency, and they want to keep me. It's not the most exciting gig, but the hours are 8-5 and it's not even ten minutes from home. This allows maximum free time to write. I PA'ed on a movie over the summer and was working 14, 15 hour days.
How beneficial is it to work somewhere closer to industry contacts? Would you LA vets recommend keeping the day job so I can write my little heart out, or trying to find a job more steeped in the "industry?" |

That is a great situation. If you're serious about writing, working 8-5 on a studio lot is perfect. You'll gradually be able to make connections there over time and not having to work long hours is exactly what you need to write.

i think you're in a good spot. Knock out a couple of scripts and then reasses how well it's working for you.

I'm not a LA vet, but you have a job at Fox that allows you time to write and pays your bills. Sounds great!

Granted I'm not in LA, but I'll chime in anyway:
Yeh, keep the day job. 8-5 at a Fox TV Affiliate is pretty good and it gives you time, like everyone else has said, to bang out some more screenplays. |

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep the job. I doubt I could find a better situation to pay the bills and maximize writing time.
