"become a good writer. the agents will come to you. until that time, forget about agents"

Do they magically appear when you've written a good script?

Yes.

I've found that insulting a high-powered agent in a gag script does wonders, too.

I will read you work and answer questions concerning query letters based on being an assistant at a few companies that represent writers.

To find an agent I would suggest that you have a strong selling point first. Going in blind with no proven product is as close to no chance as you can get in this town.

Maybe find a hungry manager who used to be an agent and is just starting out. They will be looking for everything they can as they enter the world of being an entrepreneur instead of the safety of the weekly check.

With a manager, you have a much better chance of success if you happen to deviate from typical form. You might even try being funny or using a fresh approach to grab their interest. You can probably get most managers on the phone if they aren't huge.

Remember, an agent can only get 10 percent of what you make and it really does not make any sense for them to concentrate on a new or wannabe writer if the payoff is not in the near future. There are just too many writers who have credibility that they can push and make money on for them to take shots on unknowns.

Unless you have something in your life that really stands out as something that excites them, I would be very careful of applying valuable time to trying to land an agent.

Good Luck.
