What does "In Development" mean?

Not trying to be coy here, but it depends on who says it.
If a waiter says it, it means one thing. If Kasdan says it, it means another. Most of the time, it's a phrase that can be a nice way of saying negative things. In other words, if someone outside the industry says it, it's probably an extremely optimistic slant on nothing just to impress freinds and workers. If a professional in the industry says it, say, a Writer, it is usually a way to say that a script is making the rounds and has "interest" from a particular party. If a studio exec says it about a project, it usually means that they have decided to purchase/option the project to see what can be done with it. If an ex-girlfriend says it to you, it means you have to start putting aside child support. Every waiter and bartender in this town has something "in development". People in this business have many phrases that they use to put a good spin on a bad result. An actor might say that Speilberg is looking at him as a possible star of his next movie, when in fact it only means the actor sent his unsolicited pic/resume' to Amblin. When someone says that an exec/producer/director "has interest" in them or their project, it usually means that they got a polite non-commital response to something they submitted. Learning how to interpret the double-speak is an art unto itself. ZODITCH |

Zoditch,
Thanks for the reply. I am trying to figure out where I am before I send out my second script. A producer in NY has been attached (the attorney I got called it an attachment, not an option) to my first script. The producer seems to be actively seeking out actors and money and distribution deals, etc., so there is more than the euphemistic "interest" involved. However, I am afraid that if I refer to it as "in development" in my next set of queries, it will sound more like the waiter's version than Kasden's. I am a little ahead of myself anyway. There is still a lot to do on the second script. Thanks again |

I think you should be asking what "attachment" means! Who's this producer to attach himself to your work without any compensation? You realize now that any other production company interested in your script will have to pay off this guy to get rid of him?

Jami,
Yes, I understand. We've been through that part. See: pub110.ezboard.com/fdoned...=557.topic ("If Come Deal" a couple of weeks back. |
