The following is my check list of "How to create a character". Hope this helps some newbies out.
EJ ---- CHARACTER CREATION TEMPLATE PHYSIOLOGY Full name: Age: Born: Marital status: Height: Weight: Hair: Eyes: Skin: Posture: Appearance: good-looking, over- or underweight, clean, neat, pleasant, untidy. Shape of head, face, limbs. Defects: deformities, abnormalities, birthmarks. Diseases. Heredity: Voice quality: What does the character sound like(posh/common, fast/slow, intelligent/dumb)? Does the character have an Accent, perhaps a Stutter? External Impressions: one word from their Physiology, sociology, psychology Reputation: Again, as above but exaggerated. Features: Does the character always carry/wear certain things (mobile phone, gold rings, toothpick etc.)? SOCIOLOGY Class: lower, middle, upper. Occupation: type of work, hours of work, income, conditions of work, union or nonunion, attitude toward organization, suitability for work. Occupational awards, medals: Occupation career: previous jobs. Education: amount, kind of schools, kind of colleges, marks, favorite subjects, poorest subjects, aptitudes. Home life: parents living, earning power, orphan, parents separated or divorced, parents habits, parents mental development, parents vices, neglect. Family Structure: Siblings: Any? Race. Social/ Economic Level. Religion. Habits. Quality of relationship. Living/ deceased. Marital background: previous relationships. Friendships: Closest. How many? Reasons for friendship. Quality of friendship. Length of friendship. How did they meet, become friends? Religion: Race, nationality: Place in community: leader among friends, clubs, sports. Political affiliations: Amusements, hobbies: books, newspapers, magazines, music, TV, Films. Food habits: What food does he/she eat, are they health conscious? What about drink, are they tea total? PSYCHOLOGY Sex life, moral standards: Personal premise, ambition: Frustrations, chief disappointments: Temperament: choleric, easygoing, pessimistic, optimistic, critical, naïve, cynic, phony, selfish, generous, jealous, trusting. Attitude towards life: resigned, militant, defeatist, positive, negative, superior, inferior. Attitudes toward:         Self                                 Others                                 Friendship                                 Sex                                 Love                                 Family                                 Marriage                                 Money                                 Country                                 The World                                 Religion Complexes: obsessions, inhibitions, superstitions, phobias. Dark secrets: one time big secret that's been kept to itself. Inner self: extrovert, introvert, ambivert. Abilities: langages, talents. Qualities: imagination, judgment, taste, poise. IQ: Favorite saying: what is the characters motto (money makes the world go round/live life to the fullest)? Who is you're hero? Who do you admire or emulate? Sense of humor? Astrological interpretation: sign, then key factors due to planets orbiting at time of birth.                                 Food for thought... How would your character react to: -        Inheriting $1 million -        The death of a loved one -        A natural disaster: Hurricane/ earthquake etc -        Being fired -        Meeting an old friend or enemy not seen for years -        Having or raising children -        Being raped/mugged/violated in some way -        An unexpected kindness or compliment -        A serious illness such as AIDS or cancer -        A flat tire on the expressway -        An interracial relationship -        Five minutes on local or national TV Interview with... Asks questions to your character: About other characters in script, occupation, act I twist, how did they end up where they were.                                 24 hours in a life of... Day to Day: 24hrs of typical day in the life of... Questions of character... 1-                If your character was dying, unexpectedly, would they regret never telling someone something? 2-                Would your character accept $1 million to leave the country and never set foot in it again? 3-        Your character has the ability to 'think' people to death. When this happens, it appears natural, so nobody thinks any foul play. Is there any times when your character would use this ability, and why? 4-        What would constitute a perfect evening? 5-        Would your character chose a successful career, but with a dull private life, over a successful private life, over a dull career? 6-        If your character could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability, what would it be? 7-        Would your character meet someone who was there perfect mate, only knowing that they would die in 6 months. Would your character go through the pain of intense love, or shy away from the chance? 8-        Does your character prefer being around men or women? Does their closest friends tend to be men or women? 9-        Would your character be willing to murder one innocent person, to stop world hunger? 10-        What is the characters most treasured memory? 11-        If your character knew that a nuclear war was going to break out in less than a week, what would they do? 12-        What is the greatest accomplishment of your characters life? Is there any hope that they can do any better? 13-        Name one material item your character would save during a fire? 14-        Your character is offered $1 million dollars to pick up one of ten guns (one of which is loaded), and shoot themselves in the forehead. Would they do it? 15-        If your character could choose a manner of death, what would it be? 16-        What is it your character feels most grateful for in life? 17-        How forgiving is your character? 18-        When your character tells a story, do they often exaggerate or embellish it? If so, why? 19-        How much does your character feel in control of their life? 20-        Is it easy for your character to ask for help? Will they ask for help? 21-        Would your character like to be famous? In what way? 22-        What are your characters most compulsive habits? Do they struggle to break those habits? 23-        What is it that your character strives for most in life? Accomplishment, security, love, power, excitement, knowledge, or something else? 24-        How easily embarrassed is your character? 25-        Does the fact that your character has never done something before, increase or decrease its appeal to them? 26-        How many different sexual partners has your character had in their life? Would they prefer to have had more or fewer? 27-        Would your character lie in order to avoid embarrassment? 28-        If there was one thing your character could change about themselves, what would it be? 29-        Has your character ever inflicted harm on another human being? If so why? 30-        When was your character most enjoyable years?
