I talked to him in Austin once and he seemed kinda dickish but did talk to me which was pretty cool, and if he wasn't kind of a dick I would have been totally disappointed.

I talked to him in Austin as well a few years ago. He seemed like an odd duck, funny, but odd. I think he was more interested in getting with the babes that were hanging around our table.

Yep, that's pretty odd, alright. 'Cause who wants to get laid when there's a bunch of folks waiting that want to talk Lethal Weapon?

I guess living in Austin, where the ratio is around 2 1/2 women to every man, you get a little spoiled.

I've spoken to him a few times at AFF and he was pretty nice, but one thing I've noticed is that he really does not seem to like being approached about his older work. I don't know if he interprets interest in the older films to mean you're implying that you didn't like KISS KISS, BANG BANG, or what, but he seems to prefer to either discuss his most recent work or to discuss other topics altogether.
I told him how much I loved THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT and the reaction I got from him was basically that I'd insulted him but he was trying to be polite about it. On the other hand, once I was roaming the festival dreadfully sick with a horrible cold, and I got to a panel at which he was speaking and the last seat was right in front of him, and I spent the whole panel hacking and snuffling and worrying that he was looking at me and thinking, "Great, now I'm gonna get sick." And I spoke to him afterwards and apologized for being his own personal Typhoid Mary, and he really could not have been sweeter about it. (And later in the weekend when he saw me again, he asked how I was feeling.) And I know someone else who spent several hours at the Driskill bar shooting the breeze with him about psychiatric drugs. So I think you just have to hit the right moment and the right topic with him. That said, he is a great speaker at panels and seminars and stuff, and I'm sure he'll be great at this event. But it does seem like he attends AFF every year, so if you're going to spring for a plane ticket you might as well do it in the fall and catch the festival and the films and all the other great speakers. If you're local to Austin, though, it's absolutely worth going to see him, I think.

There will never be another Shane Black. The marketplace has changed. I hope he's real happy with his money. He's part of a dying breed. But Ben, you should attend. Make sure to ask him about Long Kiss Goodnight. |
