5150, an online screenwriting workshop founded and run by Max Adams, has chairs opening in June. The 5150 workshop is advanced, international, and includes working writers as well as newcomers exhibiting exceptional talent and drive. Members who have participated in Max's workshops include Nicholl Fellowship winners [plural] as well as winners of Warner Bros., Blue Cat, Breckenridge, and other recognized competitions. The workshop is four years old, moderated, and private. There are minimum posting and reviewing requirements for participation. Page samples are required prior to admittance. There are monthly dues.
If you are looking for a dynamic writers' group with an emphasis on peer review, one of these chairs may be for you. For more information, visit http://newacademy.us/courses/5150.htm There is a contact page on site. |

How do I write in if you don't receive e-mail? I'd be curious what the dues are and so on. Thanks.

Hi GiG, hope all is well with you.
Hey dirtbottle: http://newacademy.us/contact.htm Dues : $24.95 per month. A three month commitment is required to join. If you do not plan to stick around at least three months, 5150 is not for you. 5150 is not a part time commitment. It is a both barrels commitment.

I think it sounds like a great workshop, however I'm curious why a monthly fee is needed if it's all done online? What is the overhead? Just curious. It looks like it's 25 bucks a month, with 25 members that's $625 a month in revenue. Just wondering where it's all going.
Good luck ![]() |

It is my experience people respect what they pay for and often take what they do not pay for for granted. The dues go into site maintenance, hosting fees, software updates, supporting the web empire, offsetting the time I spend running and maintaining the workshop -- and they make sure people who are there are serious about their writing and about being there.

All I'm saying is, you should consider a free system. Use freeforums.org. it's a great online resource to provide a similar forum setup to DD with full control. Then, delegate a couple mods to help out. These forums run themselves when you have less than 30 or so people involved, especially if they are trusted private members. I'm real curious what kind of "maintenance" time you are spending that would demand such a high fee. I run and maintain three businesses outside of running my free workshop: EDITED: PM me if you need url's. I have designed and run each website. Guess how much I pay a month to host these and keep them up to snuff? $30.00. So I run a workshop with a high level of talent like yourself and 3 complete websites including the workshop site and I pay $30.00/month. Again, where is the overhead to justify $625 a month from your members? I'm not trying to nail you, I'm just trying to open the eyes of other writers that might think they need to pay a "fee" for a workshop. It's unnecessary. Anyone can start one for free and anyone can find the right members with a little elbow grease. Last edited by Telly : 06-01-2010 at 10:52 AM. |
