Quality writing is evocative - whether a book, a screenplay, fiction, non-fiction. Doesn't matter. And when you're up against thousands upon thousands of other aspiring writers trying to catch the attention of the gatekeepers, IMO missing opportunities to evoke imagery in the reader's mind is not the way to go.

Sure, I could write: 'Joe Smith enters the ballroom, a party is underway.'

And leave it at that - but it's not evocative. And I have no idea what the reader's mind will fill in.

A couple of adjectives, a slyly crafted metaphor, a CLOSE ON, a WE SEE, these tools can snap that imagery into sharper focus and communicate to the reader: "You're in good hands, Reader. You will not be disappointed. Read on..."

I not saying one way is right or wrong. It's just an observation, something to be considered when reading other people's opinions.

I think the post depicts a false dichotomy. They are the same thing - however you label it, a screenplay describes what is seen, and what is heard. Whether you look at that as describing a movie in your head or a visual story that can be filmed doesn't matter. I certainly don't think it determines a writer's perception and use of screenwriting guidelines.

The style an individual writer uses to evoke mood and control emphasis and perspective has nothing to do with this new invention of two fundamental types of script.

You know, there's two types of two-lane black-top. The one where the white line seems to have more emphasis, and the one where the black lanes seem dominant.

Surely if you wanted to write like Stephen King, the most obvious way to do so would be to chop of his writing hand and graft it on to the stump where you would have just removed your own.

As science and various horror stories has shown us, this would definitely transfer his writing abilities to you.

I must say, I'm quite disappointed you didn't realize this yourself SS

You grafted his penis to the stump where you hand was?!?

Actually, I can see a few advantages with that which would more than make up for the drawbacks.

Anyway, at this point, you and I are writing neither a movie nor a story, so we must return this thread to its proper owners.

I don't think they are arguing. They are simply stating why one of the particular groups may write the way they do.

The "other" group could re-phase their words to explain why they write the way they do.

Before you challenge one person's stance on a certain "rule" you need to understand where they are coming from.

In the end it's still a story about a boy and his dog no matter which way you tell it.
