From the other end (this is what I hear anyway) the Camera is a pain to work with and camera crews are not fond of them

I wonder why that would be? Couldn't you easily take two of the same type of any digital camera strap them together and simultaneously control them with one control panel?

i don't mind spending money on 3d as long as i know in advance it will significantly enhance the experience. for example, the transformers dark side i plan to watch in 3d because all the moving mechanical parts are going to kick ass in 3d. for avatar, it was all the pretty colors and depth of the world that sold me on watching it in 3d. so far, my favorite 3d has been the guardian's of ga'hoole. that ocean wind tunnel set piece; wow, i could literally feel my eyes dilate as i was watching the screen.

I don't think hollywood has anyone but themselves to blame for this. If the 3d in every 3d film was as good as avatar, or beowolf, then audiences would be getting their moneys worth when they pay extra, but that hasn't been the case, they very quickly set out to cheapen the 3d experience, and we get the last airbenders and all these other awful 3d conversions which make you wish you hadn't paid the extra.

The cameras are bigger and heavier.

While this might not seem like a big deal, it just means everything is *slower*. And that can be really frustrating, as the camera prevents you from working the way you want to work.

Yeah of course it will always at least twice as heavy as the equivalent 2d rig but with light weight cameras you probably could pull off some pretty mobile shots.

The best thing about 3d if it ever becomes the norm for big block busters is maybe it will finally put an end to this palsied. super zoom, shaky cam, ADHD cutting bullsh1t that's become in vogue in the last 5 years.

Are you sure? i can just imagine Tony Scott salivating at the idea of adding another dimension to his spastic-cam™ antics.

I actually don't mind 3D. I'll pay extra for 3D. Both Avatar and Tron Legacy were gorgeous to watch in IMAX.

However - I think the studios are making very bad choices by trying to pump out "every" summer movie in 3D. Clash of the Titans also proved why it's an absolutely terrible idea to convert a film to 3D in post. I totally regret watching that in 3D. It was garbage. If you are going to do 3D movie, then shoot it in 3D. It is the right way, and the only way.

That's about to change though. Cameron and his PACE company have just developed more mobile/hand-held 3D cameras. Probably a lot more expensive to use, but also a lot less heavier.

Exactly this. People don't want to perpetuate H-wood's money-making scheme when it adds nothing to the STORY.

i agree with this 100%. the "special" quality of going out and seeing a 3d film is lost when the product is saturated and we never know which ones are going to be really great in 3d. that's why i use my own barometer for things i'd like to watch in 3d.

the ironic thing is, imho, there is a huge market group for the saturation-3d method but it's not the group currently being targeted by hollywood.

if more animations were available and made in 3d - kids would go nuts wanting a pair of "cool" 3d glasses. similar to mcdonaldland toys with a kid's happy meal. monster glasses, princess glasses, etc. cheap, plastic cool kid's glasses and all for the price of admission.

lower the price from the current high 3d cost but make it a little higher than non-3d currently costs and presto - dineros.
