Okay...I know this is Hollywood. And I know it's all about money. But this bothers me.
The producer of Ray is sheparding this project. He plainly said in an interview "This will be the next Ray." He admits that Ray paved the way for these types of movies. Ane he even has interest from Jamie Foxx, once he looks at the script. I'm sorry, but I feel like this attitude and approach to this project is capitalistic. It diminishes the importance of Robinson's story, and hell, even makes Ray's story seem less special - since it's obvious now it was all for dollar signs. And why do I have a feeling this producer is white? Ele... |

Dear Elephant,
First, as you said, it is Hollywood. Of course, the producers, directors, actors, writers, etc are hoping to make some money. Second, Ray made a lot of money and I thougth it was pretty good. Third, I am glad the script is out to Jamie Foxx. I was worried when the listing on Done Deal said that Robert Redford was set to star. I had visions of Al Jolson. |

I'm not saying this can't be a good movie. I just used to feel like the motivation for making Ray was to tell a deserving story of a legend. I feel the motivation for telling Jackie Robinson is Ray. Know what I mean?

Why does the producer saying "This will be the next Ray" have to mean that Ray was only made for the money?
Isn't it possible he just meant this will be another great biopic about an interesting guy whose story deserves a big feature-film treatment? |

A Jackie Robinson biopic is long overdue. Spike Lee was trying to get it off the ground over a decade ago. The old docu-drama starring Jackie as himself wasn't very good at all. I have no qualms about what motivates Hollywood to make a good movie, as long as it's a good movie.

I think it'll have a good balance with Redford involved. Redford+baseball+JFoxx=$$$$$$$$$
And as I understand it, the focus is going to be on the JRobinson/Manager (played by REdford) relationship and how he had to pick the right player to forge ahead with integration. I just keep thinking of Wilford Brimley in the Natural at every opportunity saying: "I shoulda been a farmer" c Plus they have the family's approval and enthusiastic involvement...which could be good or bad for the film but at least they will have an honest protrayal. |
