  • how would you write this scene. help?

How would you write a scene in which a character is singing? whould you just write the lyrics of the song and write it as a dialogue:
    celin dion
    lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalal
or would you just simple write an action for it?

    Two ways...

Robert sings while Jimmy wails on his electric guitar.

    or...

    ROBERT
    (sings)
    Whole lotta love!

Jimmy wails on his electric guitar.

I would use an action line, and describe the emotion meant to convey.

Celine Dion's "Lalalalala" from her "Yodel en Français" album is definitely one of her best.

If the act of singing is what is advancing the story I'd put in in the action.

If the specific words being sung are what advances the story I'd put it in dialogue.

If the character is singing the song, putting just a snippet that includes the lyrics that are important to that scene into the dialog is okay, but if you've picked a song most people will know or if the title gives a clear indication to the mood of the song, I wouldn't waste page space on lyrics.

In most cases all you need is: Joe sings Celin Dion's "I'm Pounding My Chest While Singing Flat Through My Nose." (Get the impression I'm not a fan? )

              What Deus said.

What's important? *That* he sings or *what* he sings?

Good point about whether its important that he sings or what he sings.

An example from Office Space when the guys are stuck on the freeway-

Michael Bolton is twenty-six and looks like a young republican. He has glasses, brown hair parted on the side, a shirt and tie. He is listening to a gangsta' rap song (Scarface -- "The Diary") with his stereo cranked. He sings along, knows all the words.

                Michael
(Rapping along to himself with the CD)

...A tisket, a tasket, a xxxxx got his xxx kicked. A cop put a gun to his face, closed casket...

Clearly, what he is singing has particular significance in this case. If it did not, you could confine it to the action. (Perhaps - Randy sings along under his breath. Angela rolls her eyes and sighs.)

                That's just my two cents.
