  • Anyone else write with music on?

I write to the sound of dogs growling mostly.

Baroque or 50's west coast (cool as opposed to hot)jazz most conducive for me.
Also minimalist : philip glass, steve reich.

jeff: brain researchers say stick to instrumental only-- vocals actually interfere with your brain's creative processing. And less jarring , more rhythmic -as in above selections- the best.

I write with music on all the time. About 100% of the time it's heavy metal. Usually Kamelot, Iced Earth, Dragonforce, Falconer, Running Wild, Dream Theater, etc.

If a frikkin' pillow landed on the ground twenty miles away it'd break my concentration. No can do with music or other sounds going on while I write. Complete silence is preferred. But I do listen to music between writing sessions as it gets the blood flowing, like a fighter before a fight. Then just like a fighter, I go and make a mess outta the script or it knocks me out.

Depends on the scene I'm writing. I usualy choose music to suit that. Trying to create my own personal soundtrack as I go.

Pretty much all the time. I just started writing a noir a few days ago, and I picked up "Crimes and Dissonance" by Ennio Morricone last night. Can't wait to write to it. I mostly listen to ambient and scores to movies similar to what I'm writing. Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Aphex Twin, Vangelis, Future Sound of London, and the like. My favorite soundtracks are probably Blade Runner and Once Upon a Time in the West. Lately I've been spinning Code 46 and 1492: Conquest of Paradise.

i like silence, but if there's music/TV i usually tune it out after about 5 mins anyway.

                  Screams and moans.

                  Blades piercing flesh.

                  Saws grinding through bone.

And the occasional plea for mercy.

These are the sounds that wake my muse.

It may not be playing while I write, but I often use a song to set the tone of a piece for me. "Live Forver" by Oasis, "English Summer Rain" by Placebo, and "Bring It On" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have all inspired projects.

I scratch track my movie with Goldsmith or Herrmann or some other composer before I write the script... then write the script to music that fits the scene.

                              Nope.

You don't want to see the man behind the curtain. It's a mess.
