  • How should I interpret this feedback...

My screenplay has received some positive and negative feedback...well all is good, since it helps grow as a writer. While I know there are some plot and pacing issues, I wanted to share some of the positive feedback...but how should I interpret these?

The story is a horror tale...

Here are the comments I received recently:

    "intense and disturbing tale",

    "nicely executed final payoff sequence",

"the material possesses an intensity that's decidedly unnerving",

"the writer takes many scenes right to the edge of our ability to watch them"

    "dialogue is smoothly executed"

Any thoughts or comments? I'm thinking I'm on track with the way the story is...

You're having trouble interpreting those statements? What's puzzling about them? I'd agree they're not helpful if you're interested in identifying your script's weak points, but they seem pretty straightforward.

Why don't you post the entire feedback?

          "intense and disturbing tale",
If that's what you were aiming for, then be happy.

          "nicely executed final payoff sequence",
          Pretty clear with this one.

"the material possesses an intensity that's decidedly unnerving",
Once again, good for a horror story.

"the writer takes many scenes right to the edge of our ability to watch them"
          Means they are disturbing.

          "dialogue is smoothly executed"
          That means it's good.

This all sounds awesome unless you are writing a rom com. In all fairness, I have seen some rom coms that sound like this, though.

Where are the negative statements? Or are these statements saying it's almost too disturbing for a mainstream audience?

Yeah, you really need to put the negative comments out there, too.

I'd interpret it as really good...unless it came from your mom.
You know how forgiving they can be.

Does each line of feedback represent a different reader?

sounds like the blurbs they put down on movies from obscure papers in south dakota.

it's generic. i can pretty much tell you it's not a good script by you who posted it and the comments. did you pay for this service.

stop fooling yourself and get a grip.

geozero, I do agree you would need to place the whole analysis. This comments, as seen here, could be taken out of context.

I assume this was a pass, no? If so, they mean "nice try, keep working".

Re: How should I interpret this feedback...

Thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement.

Of course this was a "pass" otherwise I'd be bragging about the $$$ from the option or sale.

These comments did come from industry readers.

Some of the replies here though seem to imply that if a pro reader made these comments they mean little... how's that?

Anyway, here are some of the "negative" comments:

                              "characters are under developed"

                              "lacking in variety"

"baffled that the writer doesn't exploit or flesh out with flashbacks or monologues".

These additional comments helped me realize what points need strengthening, yet it seems that the positive comments lead me to believe that I'm on the right course.

I know now what I need to do in my re-write, so long as I don't detract from the good points.

                              Thanks again for the feedback...
