Are screenwriters getting the short end of the stick or are just plain whiners? Here's an article by the A.V. Club about the importance of scribes. Without a screenwriter and therefore without a script, I'd say screenwriters are pretty damn important (to say the least)...but that's just me.

Re: Do screenwriters really matter?
Without a script money + power + vision = politics, not film.
That said though, the screenwriter is just one piece in the puzzle. He's the first piece to be connected, and without him you can't have a movie, but then again without a actors, a director, and producer(s) a screenplay is just useless paper. Every part of the puzzle is necessary.

Re: Do screenwriters really matter?
When was the last time the Screenwriter "opened" a film at the box office, though?
Writers need to change the HW paradigm. Change the language of the Bizness.
I suggest ... start sticking illustrations in your specs.

And the rest of us crawl beneath the proverbial table, waiting for a crumb to fall off.
Advice from writer, Kelly Sue DeConnick. "Try this: if you can replace your female character with a sexy lamp and the story still basically works, maybe you need another draft.-
