    Re: Shooting your own short!

If you can't borrow a camera, rent one. Shoot on weekends, and you get two days for the price of one. If you can't find a camera rental place where you live, check Craigslist for rentals, or post an ad yourself looking for one. Sometimes you can find a DP with their own camera package.

Another option is to take the advice of Robert Rodriguez and write around what you've got. Is the only camera you've got a cell phone? Make that part of the story and shoot it that way. I've seen a brilliant short film made with voice-over and still photos.

Keep your the number of locations down to a manageable level (like one or two in the same area or building) and you can knock it out in a weekend. Trust me, save the action sequences for your third or fourth short film. PLAN EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU START SHOOTING!

Here's the short film secret weapon: SOUND! You can get away with a number of sins on the video side if your audio is clear and professional. People will just think it's your "look." Don't scrimp on the microphone. The best looking video footage can be KILLED if the sound is bad. It will just seem like a cheap production. NUMBER ONE RULE: Nothing short of bad acting will kill your project faster than bad sound, and it's really hard to fix later. Nobody will care about the writing if it sounds like crap. Even on the internet.

Now go shoot something, and use this power only for good.
