  • Enough conflict (newb question)?

How do you know when you´ve had enough conflict in a scene?

  • #2
when it can't hold any more without distorting it and detracting for the dramatic function of the scene.

It's not just about creating conflict. It's about getting the reader emotionally involved. You can have a knock-down, drag-out fight that has the reader yawning, or a minor disagreement that has the reader screaming at the characters.

The conflict has to be enough to create a lasting tension, i.e. one that carries over in the readers mind to the next scene and beyond. That way, each scene keeps the conflict--and the level of tension--building. That's what you're shooting for. Conflict is a means to an end, not the end in itself. Don't just add conflict for its own sake--use it to add emotion to your script,
