  • Character spanning 10 years

I have received great feedback on my latest screenplay -- BUT (there's always a but) the concern is that my protagonist goes from eight to eighteen in the story. Over the course of the story, he goes from eight - to twelve - to fifteen - to eighteen -- and each age gets roughly the same amount of screen time. Of course, I thought about this when I started writing the story, but I went ahead and wrote it because I was really passionate about it.

My question is whether anyone knows of another movie (hopefully a successful one) where a kid has progressed in age like this. It's obviously easier for an adult character to age, because they can use make-up for the same actor. However, in my case they would definitely need to cast two, probably three different actors to play the protagonist's role. According to one producer, that would make it expensive and also hard for the audience to attach themselves to the character. I'm certainly not disagreeing with that, but I'm wondering if you know of anything similar. My model was Cinema Paradiso in which the protagonist went from eight to mid-teens to late teens to a middle aged man. They used three actors to play the role.

I'm not positive, but I think there was a similar progression in Angela's Ashes.

        Greek Unity Of Time

I agree with the producer... plus it's a casting nightmare. How do you find 4 *good actors* who all look alike, and are the right ages...

Okay - now who is the star?

This is the kind of thing that might make a better book, or maybe an indie flick (make it yourself).

PS: Most of GUMP was with a full grown Gump.

"The Butterfly Effect" came to mind. It's mostly Ashton Kutcher's character as an adult, though it flashes back (in pretty big chunks) to various points in his childhood. I believe there are two or three actors total who play that role.

The Heart is Deceitful... is a recent example... only spans 4 years though, but two twins play the 11-year old!

Copy, I had a story with a similar logistical situation -- and the problem your producer cited occurred to me. I changed the story so one actor could play the role. This is not always possible of course, but maybe you could shift the majority of the action/story to a set age for the protag.

                Re: Greek Unity Of Time

I'm currently working on a script where the protagonist varies in age from his mid 20's all the way to his mid 60's. The majority of the story takes place during his mid 60's, the flashbacks are quick but serve the story well, so he's only those younger ages for brief scenes.

This will probably be a problem for me too, but I bet a bigger one would be the fact my character isn't a 20 year old pretty boy. Nobody wants to see old people, I know, but I'm writing it anyway.

                  Re: Greek Unity Of Time

                  another example:
Colin Ferrell in A Home at the End of the World
                  www.imdb.com/title/tt0359423/

also - Igby Goes Down has a scene where Igby was much younger but whenever you have a character played by an actor w/multiple actor syblings..... casting is easy

I think you should pick one age to tell the bulk of your story and only refer to the other ages when it's necessary.

I really doubt you have a story through out.

Look hard and you will find that one age carries the soul of the story.
