Which, as a side note, is an interesting thing to consider for a script. Yes, you set an overall tone, but depending on the sub-genre, you decide which character is allowed humor or not. so in LOTR for instance, cleary Pippin and the other guy can make jokes, but never Aragorn or Gandalf. They are allowed somber wit. But there are action films where the main guy CAN be funny, humor is not relegated to the comic relief staff.

I remember I once tried to start a thread about that, and I was basically ridiculed, "oh just try to make your characters original." Well, duh, my characters are always freaking kick ass original and unlike any others.

But: there is a long list of character types that we know and unconsciously use.

When you brought up your Aragorn example, I actually considered mentioning that Merry or Pippin could get away with the rotten egg line. There definitely are archetypes, and we all use them. Where the originality comes in is in making sure they're not stereotypes. Making sure we add something new, a twist, a freshness to the archetype. IMO.

And of course, the genre counts... whether we're writing comedy, drama, etc. But even in a comedy, there are the people you're laughing AT and the people you're laughing WITH. Big difference.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. I never said I was, but people just automatically assumed. I hate to say it by I do that too. If someone's name or avatar doesn't make it obvious or they don't mention it, I typically think they're dudes too. Hmm.
