other people will decide what the title will be - you will (almost certainly) have nothing to do with it.

if you want total control over all elements you must put up the cash and make the pic yourself. otherwise, other people will make these decisions

Short titles can be BIG on the poster and DVD cover. People tend to shorten the long ones. Listen to the people in front of you who are buying tickets.

just make sure the title describes the movie... fancy titles that are vague or cute don't work for film.

                TITLES

When selling a spec, titles may be more
                important than you realize.

Many buyers like a good title - because
they'll have to pitch it to their boss.

Some of the titles mentioned above -
                like ...LESSER GOD and ...MARIGOLDS
come from plays. The others are from
movies made a long time ago, or from
scripts that were not sold on spec.

Titles that worked for me (even though the film might not have):

Down and Out in Beverly Hills

                  Smilla's Sense of Snow

                  Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf

Presumably this is why movies like THE MATRIX, JAWS, SEVEN, BABE, THE RING, SAW and RESERVOIR DOGS were all such huge flops.

I watched Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, and Snatch based on the title. I felt very cheated.

Jmat - Write your story. Somewhere in there you'll find
your title. It could be a phrase a character says "...is this As
Good As It Gets..." or maybe your title will describe the
setting, "Casa Blanca" or maybe it will describe the action,
"Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. (heh)"

Somewhere, the title is right there in front of you. Doesn't
matter how many words, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
or how few words, "Shrek" - the title will fit the story.

think u made my point - each title directly describes what the movie is about - say JAWS had been called... TRIO OF SAVIORS... or DARK WATER MYSTERY...

                          what the heck...

a movie about a shark called "JAWS"... a movie about a deadly well (circle) called "THE RING"... a movie about a baby pig named Babe called "BABE"...

"Jaws" may be the best movie title ever. It's exactly right for the film.
