Has any recent feature film by the great masters (Lucas, Spielberg, etc.) dealt with a compelling story in this kind of environment and technology?

If not, could this be done? Submerge or not submerge a story?

well there was atlantis. but it was animated.

and i did see a long underwater sequence in sky captain. where they apparently are flying their aircraft underwater through what looked like an old cityscape.

Yes, Artificial Intelligence did it, but it was really just used as a backdrop. It could be an interesting setting if you really explored it, IMHO.

Also, J.G. Ballard wrote a sci-fi novel called "Drowned World" about htis idea.

Actually, Violentcases and OkeyDokey have their points right. The compelling story must exist and be submerged into the ocean with the pillars of the city and everything…

For example imagine GLADIATOR or MOULIN ROUGE or JURASSIC PARK or SLEEPER remade under the ocean, instead of on firm ground. Same stories, same actors, same clothes, but appropriate settings (using awesome special effects, computer generated imageries, etc.) to deal with this fantastic environment. How much input can a screenwriter give…without getting too technical and boring? Howâ€TMs the director going to put this together? Will big studio executives ever take a risk?

The future is coming, perhaps too soon…when half of our cities will begin to submerge (according to many scientists), and we will have to learn how to adapt. :eek

Iâ€TMm thinking about 3rd or 4th millennium societies using smart, gigantic, powerful, flexible, transparent, you-name-it WALLS holding or separating miles of ocean water, enclosing and protecting submerged city sections, and allowing submerged events â€" such as gladiator fights or romantic/terrifying/hilarious situations - to happen naturally, as if the ocean wasnâ€TMt even there!

Iâ€TMm not thinking about humans turning into nasty-looking amphibious mutants. We've seen too many of those. But maybe that's our future. Who knows! 8o

If this is filmable today, then Iâ€TMm in. Otherwise, Iâ€TMll drop the water.

Peak, I would be interested in seeing a fairly "realistic" treatment of a near-future city that has been partially submerged by rising oceans. I think that's what you're going for. What does daily life look like under those conditions? How do people adapt? What new technologies/behaviors/cultures/sports do people create as a result? That all seems like great material to explore on film.

A lot of these other references relate to the old fashioned "dome under the sea" type of thing that has been done to death.

Not sure if you mean what you said, but you can't just take a story and lop it into a new setting. Just look at ROAD WARRIOR for an example. What happens when you create a world without petrol? The setting creates the conflict, the characters, the story. A world submerged will create its own set of problems, difficulties, conflicts. Yes, it's a great setting. But I'd want to see a film that explores what's unique about that world, too.

I'm pretty freaked out by this. I had an extremely vivid dream the other night about this exact scenario you've just explained....so if you had the same dream that i did, then we have a whole other movie premise on our hands.
