I think it's important to understand that Hollywood, like everywhere else, does function on perception and biases.

There are men who prejudge women, and white people who prejudge black people. There are older people who scoff at the young, young who scoff at the old...

...but that's just one of the hands they slap you with.

Then they hit you with the "your last script didn't work out" hand, even though it might not have been your fault at all.

Or the "you can only write this kind of movie" hand.

Or the "someone said you were hard to work with" hand.

You are going to get hit in the face so many times in this business, you might as well stop fussing about why you're getting hit this time. It's ALL irrational. Just do the best work you can, present the best pitch you can, accept that good work won't always win the day, accept that people are going to think some pretty insane crap about you for no good reason at all...

...and place your faith in regression to the mean. If the work is good, you might lose today. You might lose tomorrow. But sooner or later, you're going to start winning more than you lose.

            It's inevitable.

            C.

To me, that's what it's all about. Not just with screenwriting.

When I said "be good", this is what I was talking about.

Fascinating thread. We've now learned the top ten reasons why women and minorities are underrepresented in HW:

                  10. Don't know how to pitch.
                  9. Don't have talent.
                  8. Can't write.
                  7. Overall bad attitude.
                  6. Don't know how to dress.
                  5. Too fat.
                  4. Too ugly
                  3. Bitch too much about being underrepresented.
                  2. Irrational
                  1. HW is run by women.

But it is inevitable that genetic and/or gender deficiencies shall be overcome to someday smile in this pic as part of the majority. And perhaps the reality of serving a multicultural and multinational audience will also eventually affect Hollywood's hiring practices.

                  Or not.
