    Re: Writing with music distracting?

When writing I have to have my Ipod with the soundtracks that others have described. With certain scenes I will only play one song often that it fades into the background. But when starting out on a project I feel less compelled to control my music. (I go with Last FM, Arcade Fire radio)

When I type, my music taste is diverse:

      "Arrow Through Me" Wings
"Space Cowboy" The Steve Miller Band
      "Black Betty" Ram Jam
      "The Dragon" Biz Markie
"The Scenario remix" A Tribe Called Quest and Leaders Of the New School
"Saturdays" and "Plug Tunin (both versions)'" De La Soul
"I'm a Man" Spencer Davis Group
      "Today" Jefferson Airplane
"Down Payment Blues" AC/DC (that should be the title of a movie)
      "9th Wonder" Diggable Planets
"Pusherman", "Wild and Free", "Get Down" and "Eddie, You Should Know Better" Curtis Mayfield
"Love is Gonna Be On Your Side" Firefly
      "Uncontrollable Urge" and "Mongoloid" Devo
"Remote Control" and "So Whatcha Want" Beastie Boys
      "Bonita Applebaum" ATCQ
"Pushing the Sky" and "What Planet is This" Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts
"The Boss" and "Papa Don't Take No Mess" James Brown
"You're Breaking My Heart" Harry Nilsson (haha)
"Buick MacKane", "Life's A Gas" and "Mambo Sun" T-Rex

      And anything by Stevie Wonder.

Nice "eclecticity." Amen on Mambo Sun, Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder and Nilsson.

Nilsson's Jump Into The Fire ain't half bad.

              Writing With Distracting Music

Focus. That's why I play some distracting music, (like my transcription of Chopin's "Étude in A Minor", Op. 10 No. 2), while writing, to keep my thoughts from wandering and to keep up my typing rhythm.

                Re: Writing with music distracting?

I always write with music. I create a temp score for the "movie" from existing scores, so that when I write it's like watching the film. Different types of music for different scenes. Gets me in the mood.

                  Re: Writing with music distracting?

An odd thing I've noticed is by the time I've finished my scripts, I tend to have a specific song associated with them.

I'm still really, really, new, having only finished two scripts. But I'll forever associate Chris Isaak's Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing with one script and Change (In the House of Flies) by Deftones with the other one.

With the current project I'm working on it looks like Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord) by Johnny Cash will probably the "song" I associate with it.

Anyone else have a similar experience? I think it's from listening to music while I write and then hitting that one song that seems to encapsulate the whole story/tone...

Yep. Florence and the Machine "Kiss With A Fist" was the song that I associated with and encapsulate a script two scripts ago.

One last thing that works for me when it comes to music is including songs in my soundtrack list that contrast the tone of the scene I'm writing. Flipping the mood. It works more with action sequences. I'll mix in Beach Boys "God Only Knows" or The Carpenters "Superstar" in a soundtrack heacy with NIN, Audioslave and the Pixies just to flip that mood.

I do this, too. (A lot easier now that I use iTunes). I don't tend to use songs with words, they distract me. Just soundtracks.

Here's a couple examples of stuff i need to get my groove on.

they're a little thick, but depending on the scene - they produce gold.
