Nice "eclecticity." Amen on Mambo Sun, Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder and Nilsson.

Nilsson's Jump Into The Fire ain't half bad.

When I type, my music taste is diverse:

    "Arrow Through Me" Wings
"Space Cowboy" The Steve Miller Band
    "Black Betty" Ram Jam
    "The Dragon" Biz Markie
"The Scenario remix" A Tribe Called Quest and Leaders Of the New School
"Saturdays" and "Plug Tunin (both versions)'" De La Soul
"I'm a Man" Spencer Davis Group
    "Today" Jefferson Airplane
"Down Payment Blues" AC/DC (that should be the title of a movie)
    "9th Wonder" Diggable Planets
"Pusherman", "Wild and Free", "Get Down" and "Eddie, You Should Know Better" Curtis Mayfield
"Love is Gonna Be On Your Side" Firefly
    "Uncontrollable Urge" and "Mongoloid" Devo
"Remote Control" and "So Whatcha Want" Beastie Boys
    "Bonita Applebaum" ATCQ
"Pushing the Sky" and "What Planet is This" Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts
"The Boss" and "Papa Don't Take No Mess" James Brown
"You're Breaking My Heart" Harry Nilsson (haha)
"Buick MacKane", "Life's A Gas" and "Mambo Sun" T-Rex

    And anything by Stevie Wonder.

When writing I have to have my Ipod with the soundtracks that others have described. With certain scenes I will only play one song often that it fades into the background. But when starting out on a project I feel less compelled to control my music. (I go with Last FM, Arcade Fire radio)

I've listened to the same CD (with headphones) for years, it puts me in the zone and my brain knows to zero in on only one thing...writing!

Music: loud but very familiar songs classic hits rock that I've heard for years, nothing new that I'll have to take time out to enjoy or get rid off

Burbon: Cheap... or Shiraz (moderately priced (ie cheap for wine snobs ))

    Hah

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy to see that it definitely varies. I was just noticing the trend of many writers listening to music while writing versus my general inability to do so.

@Paradis: I use the 1 glass (Rioja for me) when I find that I'm over-analyzing things. But only 1 glass, any more and the writing sucks and won't get done. =p

I also find the silence a bit much at times. 1mper1um, do you have the link to that site?

For my rom-coms, coming-of-ages, family stuff, and period pieces, it's all Slayer all the time.

See? Everybody's different, according to the replies on this thread. However, I'm closest to TWA, preferring non-stop trance, or "epic trance" as DJ Project Fusion calls it. Highly motivational to write epic stuff! Low on the volume, though.

YES! I find myself following the song and having a repeated chorus in your head is not good when you're trying to create dialogue.

But I find silence is too quiet - I need something. I used to listen to soft music, pan pipe type, where there is no catchy solo, melody or lyrics to distract me. Now I listen to nature sounds: birds singing, cats purring, rain etc. Someone posted a link to a site where you can create your own and I use it all the time. I strongly recommend it.

Can't write at all with music on... Editing's a different story, though (proofing, revising, that kind of stuff). I find editing kind of tedious, so having something playing in the background actually helps me go through the pages faster....

    Depends on the music.

Movie scores and classical tend to work the best, and even then it should be non-melodic stuff. Rock, pop, etc, is mostly just distracting.
