Re: Haunting, Atmospheric Music To Write To...

    I know countless bands that would fit this, being that I make dark ambient/drone music myself, and I have quite a list of bands, but here's some of my personal recommendations;

    Atrium Carceri
Lustmord (This guy has done sound design for numerous movies and games as Brian Williams)
    Raison D'Etre
Nox Arcana (especially if, like me, you like to write fantasy/horror stories. They did an entire album based on Lovecraft)
    Death in June
    later Ulver
AEthenor (side-project of two Ulver members)
The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble (one of my personal favorites)
    Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation
Bohren & der Club of Gore
    Current 93
    Arcana
    In Slaughter Natives
Coil (another one of my favorites)
    Akira Yamaoka
    Autechre
    Aphex Twin
    Boards of Canada

Anything signed to Cold Meat Industry I haven't already mentioned. This label signs the Gods of dark, atmospheric music!!
If you don't mind metal bands, I would recommend these bands. All from the darkest, most atmospheric side of extreme metal

    Sunn O)))
    Summoning
    Alcest
    Swallow the Sun
    Elffor
    Saturnus
    Shape of Despair
dISEMBOWLEMENT (Trandsendence into the Peripheral is a masterpiece)
Empyrium (another one of my all-time favorites, I also include their later acoustic/folk albums)
    Noekk

And many, many more I either forgot or am too lazy to mention.

Have you heard John Haughm's solo album?? Experimental/dark ambient music with a noise/drone streak. I think you would like it
Blessed are the forgetful: for they get the better even of their blunders.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have asked about 4 scripts ago. Live and learn.

I believe this thread should stop at 666 views.

        Who wants to be 666?

        Damn!

        666 was probably HH.

OK, you probably have WAY more suggestions then you already need...but I'm going to add one more...

            Murcof.

I'm not sure if it's an ensemble or just one dude, but if spooky/ambient is what you're after, then check him/them out!

Also check out Teargas and Plateglass. They are like DJ Spooky meets H.P. LoveCraft.

            Wicked stuff!

Re: Haunting, Atmospheric Music To Write To...

This is not quite as Avant as some of the posts...but I wrote an entire supernatural thriller script while listening only to Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief"... 25-40 times? Not at all dated, pretty great soundscape for a ghost story.

Current 93's "Nature Unveiled" has always given me the willies. You might also want to check out the Goblin score for Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA.

Here's a post by Scott Myers over at Go Into The Story about great movie soundtracks.

                  Definitely worth a glance:

It can sometimes vary depending on the scene.

But there are some albums I can listen to regardless of what I'm writing.

                    Kingfisherg - The Heartspray

The Dead Texan - The Dead Texan

                    Tulsa Drone - No Wake

Lali Puna - Faking the Books

                    Wixel - Bob

                    Monolake - Silence

                    Windy & Carl - Depths

                    Giles Corey - Giles Corey

                    Black Eagle Child - Lobelia

                    and my fav:

Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull

It's all mostly ambient. Some folk. Some drone, Doom metal. Not loud but more of a persistent sound that feels like you're being put in hypnosis.
