    In my production experience, we would call the sit-com type of show 3-camera, or three camera technique. I would consider multi-cam it's own method method, along side the other methods. I've heard that Friday Night Lights was shot this way.

      Interesting examples of extremes. Most of us know the authorial mode that Kubrick worked in but he understood that the most valuable commodity in production - if you wanted to get it 'right' - was time. So Kubrick's trade-off was to work with as lean a crew as possible to be able to afford extra time. You didn't see people standing around drinking coffee on a Kubrick set.
