  • Still photo montage at end titles.

What's the best way to work up a still photo montage at end credits? I want to show a little slice of life for my characters to the audience before we leave them to let people know they made it successfully. I have room for 3/4 page. It's a romantic drama that has an open last line.

    Thank you.

    You could say

PHOTO MONTAGE -- AS CREDITS ROLL

    1. Jack wins the pie-eating contest.

    2. Cindy and Fred cut the wedding cake.

Thanks. I feel kind of torn about it because the credits would have to be pushed back to include it, but I feel it works.

I wouldn't even mention that credits are rolling. You could just do a SERIES OF SHOTS over music. Leave it up to the director to decide how the credits roll.

As others have said, you've got quite a bit of flexibility on how to describe this. One thing you should include in most cases is a "FADE OUT." before you do this stuff. For me that makes it clear you want the actual movie to end before these items come up.

What I did was a CUT TO BLACK as soon as my character delivers a three word line. Then the roll with montage, then a FADE OUT.

I need the CUT for emphasis. Really wanted a SLAM CUT but I hear these have dropped out of favor.

Not sure yet what to do but I know one thing will be asked by a reader (viewer if I'm very lucky) and that is: Did they stay together? This is character driven so by that time the audience will be pulling for them and I didn't want any doubt they made it.

I adore stuff happening under credits. If it's supposed to go under the credits, for the love of Pete, say so.

Sounds like you pulled it off, sounds clear to me.

As a side note a cut is a cut. No need for slam, extreme or a hulk smash cut.

Yeah I agree. Cut is a cut. Thanks for all the input. I wrote it in last night and think it works. We'll see. It's a great story and nice little film but it will probably go nowhere in the major market. Nice little indie though.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Obviously it's not good to overuse this bag of tricks, but for me the different kinds of cuts do call for different things. So if the writer wants to "SMASH CUT TO BLACK:- then it makes sense to say that.
