  • Passive Voice in Description?

    Hey all, awesome forum!

Let's say the character has converted a TV into an aquarium (or w/e) as seen in Grumpy Old Men.

Would you say in the script that HE converted it, or would you say "has been converted into.."

Obviously the item in question will play a role in the film or else I wouldn't mention it.

    Thanks!

    Re: Passive Voice in Description?

If you are describing it just so we know what it looks like, and we don't have to understand who made it, you can call it "a TV converted into an aquarium." If you are first introducing us to your main character, you might tell us it's "Johnny's proudest achievement, the junkyard 1950 TV he converted into a leaky aquarium." You would be giving us information about it that the audience won't be able to see. They won't know he's the one who made the aquarium from that description unless you show him making it or tell how he made it later in dialog, but when you introduce your main character, you get leeway to say some things about him that we can't immediately see on screen because it helps the reader form a mental picture of what kind of person he is

      Thanks! Very helpful.

The character in question isn't the main character, but he gets the plot going.

The item in question is something he built that he will use in subsequent scenes.
