      Try to be original. Sounds glib, but true. There are no new stories. Just different ways of telling them. That depends on your characters and the way they react to a situation.

        Spend time outlining, and make it a point not to jump at the first thing you think of. Your first idea will usually be the most predictable idea. Keep brainstorming until you come up with effective ideas that are not ones you've already seen before. If you've seen it before, it's not good enough.

          Don't settle for your first choice. Too often we write the first thing that comes to mind. Figure out a second, third, or fourth way to go.
